What makes a voter a troll? A photographer who can not grasp that someone may not like their photo... |

Not liking it is one thing, giving a one is another. To not like an image, but have that image be well executed and lit, does not mean it's a one just because you don't LIKE it. :D
I would say a 5 vote would be a shot thats well done & meets the challenge, but you just don't care for.

I thought you were supposed to vote 1 if you want it to come first place, 2 for second place, 3 for third place etc.

OK... Here we go again... Let's say for sake of argument that I don't like turds... You post up a technically perfect shot of a turd. Don't expect me to give the turd shot a 5 just because it's done well... It's still a turd! |

Then you're asking too much... Photography is as much if not more about the subject as it is about the technicals... Take a great picture of a shi++y subject and it's still a shi++y picture... |

I would have to disagree with your premise in this instance. The mere fact that you as an individual consider a subject to be "shitty" does not equate to the image being "shitty.
What you are showing here is your preferences... which are not to be confused with the quality of the image.
Too many times we see quality images being downgraded simply because they do not fall into the acceptable realm of the general populace. There are absolutely horrifying images taken during armed conflicts that would absolutely "tank' in this realm, simply because the masses would find them too graphic.... that however does not negate the fact that they indeed are captivating quality images.
Your vote is exactly that........Your vote. However, we should not confuse personal preferences with image quality... they are not the same.
Just a thought

Quality of image will not sell an 8x10 framed and matted image of a turd... |

I have an idea! If you click the 1 vote your computer shocks you. If you click on 2 it shocks you less and so on. Problem solved!

True, but it doesn't mean you need to vote 1. In the above scenario I would start with 5, and then ask the following questions: How well does it meet challenge? How appealing is the composition? How balanced is the composition? If you had a technically correct turd with a neutral background that met challenge, with an okay composition and excellent lighting, I would still probably end up below 5, but only just. Why? Because the choice of subject is unnecessary, doesn't even evoke a reaction, and comes as standard in a flat colour. 4.

I would beg to disagree.......there are countless numbers of images that are (IMHO) unadulterated "crap" that do indeed sell for a pretty penny.
The gist of the argument here is not what MY preferences are, but rather is the image a good one.
The mere fact that I consider something "crap" does not necessarily make it so........ I am but one opinion amongst the masses.......as is yours.

If the people who vote like troll would think this much , as you people are discussing (or arguing), we would not be discussing this issue.
There is no use of this discussion, if i am a troll i just do not think i just vote 1.

Once in a while, or sometimes a little more than once in a while, I feel the need to vote something a 1. Because the image is just too horrible to look at. If it obviously took NO thought, NO effort, in my opinion, I will vote it a one. For example, a photo taken with a cell phone camera. There is no way that someone could really, really put any effort into taking a cell phone picture, and I've seen at least two here. Those got 1's from me.
But the rest at least get a three.

Well you haven't met my wife, she put lot of effort in taking pic from cell phone camera. Second you haven't seen cellphones in japan, they take really good pics. You won't be able to find the difference between them and a normal point and shoot pic.

Do trolls exist? Yesh. How do I know? My vote jumped by 0.25 pts in the rollover last time. That means that a significant portion of votes were thrown OUTTA HERE. How many on an image that ended up getting a 5.0xx from a vote in the 4.8's with over 200 votes? probably only a very small handful.
One thing I'd like to know is when did this vote cleaning start? I'm quite surprised that most of the recent blue ribbons have almost no low votes, compared with a few months ago when everyone got ones.
Oh yeah, and voting 1 isn't mean. Putting a picture in that is seriously bad is mean. :) Actually, there's a reason there is a 1, so it's not wrong to use it.
My current submission is seriously "low-mediocre" and is getting a fair share of 1's, but like mentioned earlier, that doesn't mean the image itself is a 1, it just means that people thought it was a 1. That's quite fine with me.
I vote 1's on just about every challenge, some challenges get quite a few 1's from me, but generally, I find that most of my votes follow the trends. A lot of pictures that I feel are good, but are outside of general trends get inflated votes from me and occasionally I see pictures that look good but are highly inappropriate for the challenge, so they get decreased votes. These are usually in the 4-5 range though, not 1. |

But we don't mind the unwarrented 8, 9, or 10. I don't think we call them trolls.
If your average vote cast is below a 4, you might be a troll. |

Those may have represented people who voted in a completely normal pattern, but failed to vote on 20% of the entries before the voting deadline.
I would guess that the vast majority of discarded votes are for failure to reach the voting "quorum" and not for aberrant voting patterns, though I have no hard data to back up that estimation. |
