I could be wrong, but I think rule #4 came about (at least partially) as a response to the outcry generated by Slippy offering free membership for favorites...
And thanks to Langdon and SC for the new rules!

I understand if you put a few SC members in a car for about 60 straight hours - they will come up with some true wisdom! :D
Great set of guidelines, guys! I'm totally impressed.
I want this one added as the last rule: Don't Be A Dick

Kinda like constantly directing people to the tutorial section. |
Perhaps when new members introduce themselves in the forums, instead of showing them a cartoon that says you lick your own butt, you could point them towards the important information. :P |

Anarchy doesn't mean no rules, it means no rulers; and that the rules are agreed-to by the people governed by them. |

I can only hope that L isn't for "Licking." :-/
By jove, this may run afoul of the forum rules in the forum rules thread! I may have to hide my own post.

Great work on the forum conduct rules.
Plenty of room to play, not much wiggle room on misconduct.
Keep up the good work, Admins and SC. |

While this is strictly true (the roots of the political movement "anarchism" lie in the idea of eliminating authoritarian rule and replacing it with individual self-reliance) it's no longer the commonly-accepted definition of anarchy; the word is now taken by most to denote lack of rules, disorder, confusion, etc.

I know, but I see no reason to perpetuate people's miseducation, especially about so important a subject. The USA is being ruined by the misappropriation and misuse of language, just as George Orwell predicted, and I refuse to contribute to the country's intellectual evisceration.
The word they are looking for is "chaos" or "law of the jungle." Put your money on Haliburton.

That's language for ya, my friend. I too have been known to rant against this (ask me about the word "moot", to name just one example) but regardless of the likes of us language just evolves away completely beyond our control...

Unrelated, but there's a pass in British Columbia called "Anarchist Pass". I have been trying to find out why, but haven't been able to. |

I feel singled out by rule #4.
"Do not offer anything of value in exchange for manipulation of site statistics. This includes anything based on voting, comments, or favorites. This does not include exchange of comments where no other exchange of value is involved. Exceptions to this policy, such as for contests, must be approved by Site Council in advance."
Oh well, I've made my mark. ;-)

Mmmm you don't know how lucky you are to get away with that! But it was seen before you could edit it! |
YUP - I saw it too! |
Yeah ... no offense was meant obviously, but I did reconsider how some might interpret it. Yet more evidence I shouldn't post instictively that early in the morning.

Isn't it named Anarchist Pass because of Anarchist Mountain?
"R.G. Sidley, the namesake of Sidley Mountain (and the dot on the map called Sidley), came from Ontario, his brother a professor of English at McGill, and took up a homestead in 1885 at the forks of Nine Mile Creek, almost on the 49th parallel. He gave Anarchist Mountain its name and established its first post office."
Vanishing BC is where the above was taken...about 3/4 down the page.

"Moot point" current usage: "not worth arguing about, it's over and done with now, move on, nothing to see here..."
"Moot point" origin: After the Magna Carta was signed, removing the king's absolute power over his subjects in Britain and replacing it with the original English Common Law, there was a system of traveling "moot courts" established to adjudicate particularly thorny issues that could not be resolved at the local level. If a dispute was sufficiently thorny, it was held over until the moot court passed through, and the court ruled on it. Sort of the original Supreme Court, to use an American parallel.
So, a "moot point" is actually something WORTH debating, something that NEEDS resolution at a complex level.
Very generalized statements above btw. I bet the Beagle could do a better job, and probably show me I'm not really "correct" here...
This has been an anarchic threadjacking. We return you to your original thread now.
Robt.

Sidley, a rancher who settled here in the 1800s was made Justice of the Peace and Post Master. The mountain was likely named after Sidley's political philosophy which got him dismissed from his jobs sometime around the turn of the century. |

So now I have to get any "Golden Slippy" contests approved beforehand? I move that I can have a standing pre-approval for all Golden Slippy contests. :-)
