I need some advice from the DPC oracles. My tax return is here and I'm looking for some decent RAW adjustment software so I can start shooting RAW. I've heard that PhotoMechanic is good? How about the others? Who out there likes/dislikes what?
Thanks!

i personally like RSE from pixmantec. It's free too ;)

I bought RAW shooters Premium and it's work flow is good but the image colour is sometime iffy. It's worth a look first and see what you think (and as Rikki says the essentials is free) but I would also have a look at Bibble because the output looks good.

Also did you get DPP with the camera? I did with the 20D but not sure if it was included with the 300D (you could always download from the Canon site and see if it will install - might need the first install from the CD). I believe the viewer tool can convert RAW also (never used it so not sure).

Rikki, if you hadn't posted this, I would have. RSE is definitely a great way to get into RAW conversion, and you simply cannot beat the price :-)
Yes, it is totally free, not a trial version. The "Pro" version is not free and offers more functionality, but the free version is very good indeed.

How does this s/w compare in performance to that, for instance, supplied by Canon with their cameras? Is there any reason to switch from the OEM s/w to third party RAW conversion s/w?

Let's just say I haven't even used Canon's OEM version ;) RSE offers a bit more functionality it seems ;)

I seem to spend very little time in the RAW conversion s/w - most of my time is spent in PS (7.0). CS2 deals with RAW conversion directly, I understand.

I find the workflow of RS much better than the Cannon tools. It really does have the best workflow I have seen and is very very fast. Personally I find it lacking in places for the images but then none of the converters are perfect. I suggest you download and try it out - the essentials is free and Premium has a free time based trial. There is an additional colour engine (really just more tuned profiles) that can be used in the Premium version.

RSE 2006 recently came out and it's still free.

Wow, fast response - thank you all! I don't think anything came with the 300D for RAW, so I'm going to download the RSE software and give it a try. With a price like that, how can I refuse?

How much was your tax return? You could always give this a try ;)

I'll just chime in here and agree with RSE.

How does RSE compare with Adobe Camera RAW?

Haha, that's a hoot! I don't know if my to-date-lifetime tax returns would pay for that!
