What is the difference between the Canon 2x extender and the Canon lifesize converter?

From the page you linked to:

"The Canon Life-Size Converter EF is dedicated exclusively to the 50mm f2.5 Macro lens.... allowing magnifications from 0.26x to 1x while increasing the working distance from the front of the lens to the subject. "

I do have the 50mm 2.5 macro and from your response it is dedicated to that lens.
Can i use the 2x with the 50mm 2.5 macro and the the same or close results?
I have the standard 18-55mm and a 75-300 USM.
I would like to be able to use all of the above.

EDIT
I now see, upon looking further, that the 2x wont work with any of the lenses that i currently have.
Any suggestions on what would be a good purchase for me so that i could use with all of my lenses?

You could use the 2.0xII extender, and it would give you life size (1:1 magnification) BUT you would need a 12mm extension tube between the extender and the 50/2.5 as well. Look at the photo of the 2.0xII extender. See at the top how the element protrudes past the mount? That will almost certainly interfere with the rear element of the 50/2.5, so you need some extra space.
The addition of the 12mm tube will give you slightly more magnification but you will lose infinity focus. You probably will not be able to focus beyond a few feet.
