Hello alintatoc. You might want to have a look at these shots taken with a 1.3 megapixel camera.

If alintatoc's description of his entry processing is accurate then his entry violated the rules for 'Basic Editing'. His last processing step is described as "film grain".

Yeah, if alintatoc's entry used film grain then he has broken the Basic Editing rules.

I noticed his stats too, and I'm not sure, but maybe the voting stats don't change until voting is over and this is his first time voting? If that's the case, it should be interesting to see what his stats are after voting ends.

Just like votes received on any particular photo will generally show a bell curve, votes given during a challenge will normally follow the same pattern. When the curve is consistently skewed heavily to the top or the bottom, the purpose of the 1-10 range is defeated. This is what the site admins are trying to prevent with the vote filter.

I just hope the code is in place to disregard 80-100 "10" votes as well as "1" votes as given by any voter during a challenge. It would only be fair.

As an example, my particular voting pattern has settled down into roughly the pattern below:

1 - Don't insult me. The photographer is obviously trying to be stupid and there is no artistic merit

2 - Don't unintentionally insult me. Barest amount of effort put forth but result is a disaster

3 - Buy a photography book and read it. Photographer is kind of trying but has a LOT to learn about how to use a camera and what to do with it

4 - Mediocre shot. I get it, I just don't care

5 - Not bad. Shows promise, but there is just something wrong that prevents it from being good

6 - Good. All fundamentals are in place and its slightly better than average

7 - Very good. Shows artistic creativity and is interesting to view

8 - Dang. Stands out from the rest and is a candidate to end up framed on the wall

9 - Holy crap. Incredible technical and artistic merit and should be hanging in a gallery.

10 - Inconceivable. As if God himself took the picture and angels sing when you see it.

Granted, this is a pretty rough framework with a lot of lattitude either way on any one photo, but its a place to start. As a result, I (almost) never give 1s and I never give 10s. My overall average vote cast is just over 5, which really isn't surprising given the abilities of the population of photographers (myself included) as a whole on this site - Not Bad But Could Stand To Improve.

Outstanding! I think I will print this and use it as a guide for future voting! You might say that I agree with your scale.

Worse still, the average on our scale - which doesn't include zero - is actually 5.5.

Anybody consistently voting VERY low ..... no, I'm not allowed to say it, I'll get it trouble. :-(

Maybe people vote on a logarithmic scale, in which case the average woudld be closer to 4.5.

Personally, I think the scale should go up to 11. Sometimes you're going along and you see a pretty good picture, and so you give it a 10, you see another good picture and give it a 10, and now you come across an even better picture--where do you go from there? Nowhere, that's where, because you're already at 10.

Now that the '2 seconds' thread is locked, we'll have to come to this one for all the action.

I find I give out 1's only because I compare the photos at the end and if I have voted 2, and one seems less of a photo, then I bring it down to 1. Since we have from 1 to 10, and I do wrack the photos up against each other, 1 is the only way I can actually separate what seems the least photographic. Even so, my average score given is like a 6.0, so I guess I need to reexamine what I am doing. I give out a lot of 10's, also. Usually at least 6 each challenge, sometimes more. I can't seem to be cutthroat enough, though, to score really low, even though I have received more than my share of 1's.

I find that a 1 to 10 scale is too wide for the quick judgements you have to make on photos when voting on so many. Beyond a 5 point scale (Bad, Below Average, Average, Above Average and Excellent) I really have to think hard and long. Is composition good? Does it have any defects that should take off points (sharpness, bad color cast, stray element where there shouldn't be?) Does anyone have time to really think 1 to 10 for 100+ images they need to vote on?

I think dpchallenge would be better suited with a smaller voting scale that would work better for quick judgements. 10 is just too many. It might even be helpful to assign words to the score numbers. You'd be hard pressed to assign words to 1 to 10. What is the dfference between 2 and 3 for instance?

Man, based on everyones reactions and "guides" to scoring, I should have never recieved a one. I think all of my photos display some sort of knowledge in photography. Anyway, I hardly every give out ones, or tens, but then there are just those that blow me away, either by an overly impressive, technically perfect shot or by the absolute lack of effort and uninterest in the challenge. Either way, I am kind of hurt that someone would give me a one, I can understand three or sometimes even a two if you hate my photography, but not a 1, jeeze, at least I put an effort into it. Think about what your vote means to the photographer and to the photograph before you start handing out votes.

The smell of popcorn has masked the smell of troll, which way did he go? There is a whole village with torches and pitchforks looking for him

I think that is an excellent reason to lock this thread. Hopefully the OP had his original question answered. If not, feel free to contact the SC for more details on having your votes removed.
