Hello

Should I upgrade? I want to, i have the money, should I?

Is the image quality so much better?

I realize it is 4 mpx more and fullframe sensor (and ofcourse the 2,5" screen), but overall is it worth a upgrade?

I seen some fullsize images taken with 5D, very good.

But i am also quite satisfied with the performance on my 20D.

:)

I was soooo unsure if I should upgrade or not. Not because of the cash but simply because I wasn't sure if the 5D was worth that much more than the 20D plus I had to give up some FPS.

I took the plunge 3 weeks ago anyway and I can't tell you how happy I am. There are too many things to mention. All I can tell you is that I have never been as excited by a camera as I am now. The sound of the shutter, the feel, the big LCD, the wide vewfinder.

It's not only that it's full frame sensor... your longer lenses are still long but cover so much more - as if you had a wide angle 200mm lense... It's hard to explain. I have never looked at image quality side by side but feel I can take better pictures with the 5D. The added pixels does obviously give you better image quality if you have to crop an image extensively due to more pixels.

As soon as you look through the viewfinder, you'll know you made the right decision.

Welcome to the 12.8MP team!

If you're going to upgrade WAIT until after April 1st...$300 Canon rebate on the 5D running until July 15th. I've heard many people on several different forums confirm this promotion. I'm going to be upgrading sometime before the promomtion ends, but from 300D to 5D I don't see much contest ;)

Hi thanks for all the respons.

I dont know if a 300$ off is a worldwide thing or only for US citizens.

I live in Norway. The price in norway is about 3450 $US.

So you might already be able to get it in Norway, but I don't know if canon has only started in some of the European contries or not. The thread on the FM forums can be read here. Anyways, if you're going to buy it locally just check with the dealer. They'll be able to tell you.

I also live in Norway and travel to the US a lot. I actually went to Houston for a week 2 days after I bought the camera here in Norway.

You can get it here bundlet with a 4GB CF. If you then factor in the 8-9 % sales tax in the US AND the lesser amount of cash you get if or when you sell it in Norway AND 'local' warranty AND European plug on the charger, it's worth buying it here. Even a $300 drop would not have made me by it there (although I buy all of my lenses there).

Just my 2 cent

I was going to keep mine as well. Bu then my wife decided she wanted to own her own DSLR camera. And so I sold the 20D and bought her a new 350D. She could have kept the 20D but felt much more comfortable with a smaller, more consumer oriented camera.

My wife just loves it and uses it just about every day (yes, we have a baby!) :)

Hi

I will give my 20d to my GF. And I will also still use it for wide angle shots, untill i get a wide angle lens for EF.

I got som questions about 5d compared to the 20d:
-Battery is the same?
-Uses the same remote controls?
-How big is a raw file in MB?

Almost 39mb I think. I just got a 5D in today. Seems to be built better than the 20D, but it's basically a 20D on steriods.

Wait, am I confused, wouldn't the RAW be 12.something MB since it is a 12.something MP camera?

12 seems right.

Found a couple examples on this page.

What about my other questions?

the CR2 file is about 11.4 MB and saved from CameraRaw as .psd at 300dpi it's 72.8 MB.

CameraRaw also gives you the chance of upsampling if you need bigger prints, the max for 5D is 25Mpixels
and that .psd file is 144MB (same size as tiff)

so there is enough info to work with :)

Yes, the battery is the same
The remote controls are the same
The raw file question has already been answered

In case you had a battery grip for the 20D: It will not fit the 5D.

I use the 16-35 f/2.8L for angle shots on the 5D. It then gives you the same width as a 10-22 lense on your 20D.

Oops, I was talking about the tiff file size.

Is Canon going to be offering rebate on any of their other cameras starting April 1?
