Okay, my entry in the Fill the Frame challenge was THIS I was fairly pleased with it until the first 10 or so votes, and then I realized I had missed something completely. you would think after 90 challenges or so, I would know better. Anyway, this was some kind of moth. Being a none-bug type person, I don't know its real name. I only know that a couple of them parked on the rock wall in my driveway one day last week. They were, ummmmmm, preoccupied, and I got some shots.
Here is a shot of their wings. Unattached, the larger one was 4 to 5 inches across and about 3 to 4 inches in length.
This shows the two "things"
This is the one I really wanted to enter, but I figured it didn't "Fill the Frame" enough. I started to enter it in the garden challenge, because it was taken within the time frame, but after looking at the FtF score, I was about afraid to!!

Karma, I'm astounded by the score on your entry. I had no trouble telling what it was, so maybe that played in, but I gave you a 7; I thought it was a very well executed shot and fit the challenge perfectly. I think you're assessment of the difficulty is correct; people did not understand it, so voted it low.

Karmat - One glance and I knew what this was had I been able to vote I would have given it 9 for
1) Meets the challenge
2) Excellent cropping
3) Excellent focus and DoF
4) Good light and color
In my very short stay here I have come to realise that more than votes it is the learning that is more important.
Also you have to be very literal with your compositions if you have to score high. Subject should be something which is obvious and does not make one think. Frankly I am not really sure I would like all my photography to be that way...
Having said that - I would like to add that the crowd here is much more informed than several other places...

Aaa, votes aren't that important to me either. I kinda liked my little bug here, hairy as he was. (Or she, I am not sure which was which). I guess my subject just wasn't as grabbing to others as it was to me. hahahha. Don't know that I want this hanging on my wall, though. :-)

Well, I was shocked to see your low score, Karma. I knew what it was. I think it's a great photo! |

They are Imperial Moths. And I think that was an EXCELLENT macro of it. It almost looks like a stuffed animal, you got so close. Great detail. I didn't vote in that challenge at all, or I surely would have given you a better score than a 4!

Oh, that was a great shot karmat. I thought it would do much better. Sometimes it amazes me that photos with much les quality would score higher than image like yours. But then I have to realize that many of the voters here are not photographers themselves and have no idea what goes into taking a photo like that. To enter a challenge and watch a score evolve is for fun, but what I treasure the most in this website is the feedback in the forums and comments, escpecially from photographers that know it's not that simple.

I loved your entry. I couldn't believe that detail, and I rated it very highly. On the one hand everyone wants approval, but on the other, who cares what your score is as long as you are improving? |

I had absolutely no idea it was a moth at all - my thought was it was some kind of stuffed toy! There's a lesson there, I suppose ... :-)
Gave you a six - which is my standard score for quality photos that don't really do a lot for me: and I think if I'd known it was a moth I'd have scored you higher - which is an intersting statement in itself, no?
But I think it would have been a better photo if it'd been clear it was a moth.

PS. The second of those two shots above is excellent. What a peculiar beastie it is.

Again, thanks for the feedback. I guess it really doesn't sound like it, but the score wasn't that big a deal to me. I did get enough comments to at least know what was happening. I just thought it was a cool moth. Next time I'll show more of the moth part, and a little less of the cool part. At least in a challenge! hahahahahahhha

I like the amount of zoom you chose here. You captured alot of detail and I believe has more appeal than just a picture of a moth. What might of helped is just a slight different vantage point to show more of the face.
If I could have voted I probably would have given it a 7 or 8. |

karma,
I must apologise, I completely missed what the shot was.:<( We don't get big moths around here so I didn't even go in that direction. I thought it was a stuffed animal and made no connection to the challenge.
Of course me thinking it was something stuffed I missed the fact that it is a FANTASTICmacro as well. Consequently I only gave you a 4 and it would have been a 9/10 if I had known.
Your's is a prime example of technical perfection and composition of a somewhat lessor degree. :<)
