I need help with the name of this bird. I beleive it is a Tern, but not really sure....

I think yes, a tern; given his appearance, possibly a tern for the worse!

While driving down the Oregon Coast on our way home from vacation, I spotted this bird flying from the beach area towards the forested hills with what looked like a stick in its talons. Any ideas?
I was able to identify most of the other birds we saw on the trip.
