I am just about to order my Canon 30D but I am wondering if the Sigma 17-70 is worth the extra bucks ($289 more than the kit lens) or should I stick with the kit lens?

Thanks for your advise

photozone says it's pretty good

I wouldn't get the kit lens.
Soft, built poorly, slow, and lots of CA. Many if not most who get the kit upgrade anyway.
Save yourself the money and get the Sigma.

No personal experience, but here is another user review and comparison to the sigma 18-50.

I do plan on purchasing this lens myself to replace the kit lens of the 20D/30D

Best price I've found is:

Sigma4Less @ $349.00

If you don't like them Both Adorama and B&H have it for $389.00

I'm kinda partial to the kit lens. At least I don't think it's as bad as many people do, especially if you use it stopped to the middle of it's aperture range. Afterall, I took my first ribbon shot with it --

I have no experience with that Sigma but have respect for Sigma as a whole, and f2.8 is an advantage over the kit lens. I'd say skip the kit and get the Sigma if I had to make a choice between those two.
