Has anyone here had experience with this camcorder? (I know, it is a bit of a stretch for dpchallenge, but it does take stills too). I'm looking to buy one, but haven't heard much about it. If anyone can recommend a reliable and inexpensive site from which to buy one I'd appreciate that too = )

Not familiar with the zr70, but I have the zr50. I have found that the still shots are very grainy. I have only used that capability on one occasion...usually I have my Coolpix 775 with me to take stills. I do like the video editing capabilities on my iMac, using iMovie and iDVD (video and DVD authoring programs). I have put together some fairly professional appearing videos and DVDs, using video taken with the zr50. I wouldn't buy the camera just for the still capabilities, though.

actually i don't care at all about the still capability either, i just put it in in jest as an excuse to post my question, this being a photography site

i'm mainly interested in casual shooting and dvd creation

Check here to see CNETs review, and also check this review of other camcorders. The user feedback on that canon is not stellar, but they do rate it over a 7 overall, which is pretty good.

Always check EBay for prices. (this link will take you to pages of your camera.

I use a Sony TVR, which is D8 and can capture stills..they're just really crappy stills.

I just bought the 60 model ... it doesn't take digital stills. I couldn't imagine paying a couple of hundred bucks more for the capability of taking 1 MP or less stills. I always carry around my digital camera with me.

I'm considering that one too. There aren't many other differences between them that I've found. The 70 has a "super low light" mode and a slightly longer zoom. Would the 22x zoom be much more noticeable than the 18x on the 60?

My zr50mc has the 22x optical zoom, also 420x digital zoom. Normally I discount the digital zoom immediately, based on digital zoom results in still cameras. With my camcorder, however, I've achieved some pretty impressive zoom results using the digital zoom. For instance, zooming in on a Christmas ornament from across a large room resulted in a dramatic shot. Fully zoomed, sure there was some graniness, but with video it is somewhat more acceptable since the graininess is temporary while watching the clip. The camera has some image stabilization circuitry that lets you take good clips without the shakiness that you might get with other cameras, while using the maximum zoom.
