I'm having trouble cleaning a 77mm UV filter. I noticed a pretty bad smudge on it, so I blew the dust off with an aerosol blower, then used lintless lens cleaning paper with a drop of lens cleaning fluid on it to get rid of the smudge. It only seemed to make things worse, and now the entire surface of the filter is streaked. :/ Try as I might, I can't seem to un-streak it by wiping, and I don't want to try too much for fear of scratching the glass.
Anyone have any experience successfully cleaning a well-soiled filter or lens? At this point, I'm just glad it wasn't the lens itself. |

Get some warm water running in the sink, wash your hands throuroughly with detergent, get the filter wet, drop of detergent on each side, rub gently in circular motion with thumb and forefinger under running water, rinse thouroughly, shake, dry with lint-free, microfiber-type cloth (you can get them from an optometrist or any Lenscrafters-type store).

YW; I been doing it for years :-) It's how I clean my glasses too. Recommended by my optometrist.

My optometrist said hand soap. Just a little bit. I'd be careful of "detergent". What do you mean by that? Dish Detergent?

Yes, but I use organic, low-phosphate detergent. I suppose some might be too powerful, I donno. Soap tends to leave a film, I've found... Some of them are actually abrasive.

Thanks. I'm talking of course about liquid soap, not bar soap :)

I've cleaned many DVDs using regular soap like Lux. Works fine. |
