I'm trying to edit an image in Photoshop CS1 for tonight's challenge and the "Crop" function is not working. It is greyed out on the image menu.
Can anyone tell me why this may be happening?
Thanks,
Terry

If your selection is actually a path, you need to convert it to a selection, in the paths menu, before it will crop. That's happened to me.

It's not. It doesn't seem to be letting me do just about any editing, even to a new file. I'm going to reboot and see what happens.

I was going to state the obvious and say that make sure you've got a layer properly selected; but you're not stupid.
Are you?

I occasionally have the problem that when I change tools it shows the new tool greyed like that but won't work. If I revert to the last tool it's fine, but won't let me use any others. For me, just closing that pic and reopening it fixes it. |

Also usually obvious: Photoshop won't do anything new until you finish the step you are on. For instance, if you are in the middle of a curves adjustment, you can't do anything else until you finish the curves or cancel out. But *sometimes* the window for the curves gets hidden behind other windows so you can't tell what is wrong.
Exiting from Photoshop and starting it again will fix this so I'm assuming that if this is the problem, your reboot will fix it.

I figured out how to duplicate the problem.
Press Alt to get into the menus
Arrow over to the control handle for the current window image
Select move
Use the arrow keys to move the window, and then press enter when you are done moving.
After you do this, most of the tools in Photoshop will not work until you exit Photoshop and go back in.
I had tried to use this method to move a window since I was using it as a reference to crop another image, so I needed to move it straight down. Once I moved it with the mouse I was fine.
