For those interested a reliable evaluation of the new Nikon 18-200 VR is out by Bjørn Rørslett:
Review - AFS-Nikkor 18-200 mm f/3.5-5.6 VR G ED DX
For those who just want the highlights it is as you might expect, for an 11x zoom it stretches the limits. It has problems at the long end which is different from most zooms in this group which normally have probelms at the wide end. Instead it does rather well at around 24mm. Overall though he rates it a 4- which is pretty good from him.
So, depending on your needs it looks like it will fill the need for a single travel lens as long as you keep in mind the limitations and make adjsutments.

Thanks for posting this. I have been thinking about getting this one for my trip to Europe. I want just one lens to carry around. This one seems like it might work out.

Anyone know where I can order one without being overcharged? Nikon's price is $699, right?

I bought mine from B&H and paid $750. Supply is tight so I figured I had to pay up. I kept watchng their site, along with being on their e-mail notification list, ordered as soon as it said in stock and got it no problem.
I also bought it for when I travel to Europe as I did not want to carry multiple lenses. |

I ordered mine from this small little camera shop in San Luis Obispo, CA and they are charging me $729.00. Granted, I will have to pay tax. She said she has been getting about one every couple of weeks and I am next. Yee haaa....
