Yeah...okay, so I've been really busy planning my wedding, trying to sell my house, work, etc. So I've not been able to compete in many challenges as of late. So it was a beautiful day outside, and after a crappy day at work I left an hour early to go home and do some shooting for the upcoming challenges:

I kid you not, first time I go recreational shooting in months. My 20D/70-200mm locks up on me - again. This is the 3rd time in in 5 months.

It's getting !@#$% ridiculous.

So right now I am on hold with Canon support in hopes of a supervisor. Bet you 10-to-1 they will keep me on hold until their open hours are over and then disconnect me. I'm getting sick of this crap.

I don't want a repair order...I want a new !@#$% body and a new !@#$% lens!

LOL

And that's coming from a Canon owner...

I've really been starting to think I should have. I want both the 20D & 70-200mm lens replaced. And I am not even sure I want another 20D. Don't know if I trust them anymore.

That really does stink Saj. Sounds like you got a lemon. So far my 20D hasn't given me any grief - cross my fingers.

Get Equipment Insurance and then throw it as hard as you can. :-)

Write a long detail letter highlighting all your problems in point form and demand a replacement . Send you camera to the service department for warranty purposes with the letter.

Organise a meeting with the sales department manager that is close to you or a representative and present the letter and explain how inadequate the service division is.

You need to play the sales rep/manager against the service division, this method has worked for me in the past with other consumer items.

Fotoman, I'd love to get equipment insurance. No one ever wants to insure my crap. I don't know why. I've had no losses, no claims, nada....

But both for my DJ gear and my photo equipment I can't seem to get any coverage. I look into Inland Marine and there is always some reason they don't offer it for x situation.

I am so tired of planet earth...if not for my beautiful fiance I think I'd cave.

I mean, can't a guy expect to come home after a crappy day at work (yeah, all of yesterday's code that I programmmed for a project was lost...about 3 hours of work)....and just shoot some shots with his camera?

*sigh*

My Olympus E-20N never gave me such problems. I should know better than buying new digital crap.

I should always buy "refurbished", for whatever reason. Whenever I buy refurbished products they work fine. Whenever I buy knew, they are pain in the arse defective crap.

:-(

It is BS to have that many problems, and its such a hassle. But there many people with D70's and other cameras that have had similar problems. I guess there are lemon cameras.

So, your not alone. But it must be a real pain in the arse.

Good luck.

Huh? Did I miss something. I was thinking of buying a second body and I had not heard there were problems with the D70s. maybe I better do some research before proceeding.

Yeah...I have a tendency to get lemons. I so much prefer limes...really...I do!

So gotta call this morning...

I don't know what kind of problems you have been having with canon's technical support but when i had to call them, I got right through and problemed solved that day...shipped it out the next! It also took about two weeks to get it back...which wasn't too bad at tall!

Every brand of every product has defective stuff.

In all likelihood, it's probably not both lens and camera, it's probably just one or the other. Probably impossible to know for sure which one though because it's probably just something that happens when the two of them meet.

It sounds like you have got the same track record as me.

I just went to a store last night and had the fun of getting a new pair of shoes because my expensive Goretex Merrel Waterproof shoes that are supposed to have a minimum of one year of Waterproof capability gave out VERY prematurely. I was asked if it would be OK if I left the shoes there to be sent in and tested... On a rainy night. Wearing my shoes.

It was an experience to be standing in a store with wet socks on a night of light rain with a fairly new pair of shoes built to handle torrential downpour...

All happy now... ISH. I feel your pain dude. Yours must be much worse though because you've got that stress of the wedding coming up. WHOO scary!

Same for my camera... troubles. In fact, most of the nice stuff I own has some little problem with it. (dead pixel and noisy optical drive on my Tablet PC, odd noise in my tuned and checked and expen$ive MTB...)

And I don't even have that much stuff!

Sometimes it's worth it to explore cheaper stuff. Sometimes the lower down companies work harder for your money. Not always, but sometimes.

Oh, they're send me a shipper ticket this time. But I am kinda sick and tired of shipping my equipment back and forth. This will be the 3rd time in 5 months. Not too mention, the first time they LOST my battery grip.

Actually, it was BOTH. They already replaced the IS mechanism in the lens. And the lens mount assembly in the camera. This will be the third time.

Yeah, I remeber that. But wasn't that only the early production model D70? anyway, I think for a second body I may go with a D50 as they are so cheap right now.

I love how they say

"Thank you for choosing Canon!" before they transfer you. It's like...um...yeah, you want to rub it in my nose any more.

*growl*

Well...

The camera & lens have been shipped back to the Canon factory and should be delivered this evening. So I wonder if they'll call me... *lol* okay, that was a dumb question - wasn't it?

*sighs*

Canon has some of the poorest quality service I've ever seen for a high end company.

If they send it back to me and I have anymore problems. I think a Canon employee going to find his arse 77mms wider....

Well, it sounds like part of the problem is Canon's customer service and not really wanting to honor warranty.

How is Nikon about that sort of thing? I've been saying my next camera will be a Canon because I don't like how Nikon treats Glenn's Fair Price, but I'm not liking what I'm hearing about Canon is this situation.

Nikon is great. I bought my D70 used on B&H Photo. It froze up a year and half later. I sent it to Nikon for repair and they returned within the week fully functional and free of charge. Couldn't be happier. The problem is really fixed as well. I have used the camera extensively since then.

You'll find both good and bad reports for both Nikon and Canon service. I really don't think one or the other has a great advantage. I've dealt with both, though with Nikon only for my old Coolpix.
The most difficult situations are always those problems that get repeatedly misdiagnosed. Eventually, you wind up having to elevate the issue to get resolution, and the resolution is often replacement of one (or more) items. It sure seems like this situation is at or approaching that point. Negotiating this takes tact, perseverance and diplomacy, no matter whom you're dealing with.

It's not so much that they won't honor their warranty. They are willing to do the repair free. The issues are this:

- Poor internal tracking and communication (no record of what's being sent, items easily lost, etc.)

- A challenge to get them to do anything other than repair.

- Poor communication.

I really needed this today! Jason, I'm sorry that you have so many problems, but I just had to burst out laughing when I read this.

ps. You don't happen to have lens hood? 83mm for extra excitement!

Right on! Kill them with kindness and understanding of how difficult it is dealing with the public, save the ranting and raving for the last resort!
