I'm a bit hazy on how important the contrast ratio is for accurate color reproduction. I've read no lower than 600:1 is acceptable, then I heard 500:1 is ok, then read that the apple cinema displays are the way to go despite the fact they only have 400:1 ratio. With that said I think I'm getting a 17" imac. This has a 500:1 ratio which should be fine I presume. So why such variable information about contrast ratios for photo editing and what's correct or is it all just plain bs?

I read also somewhere that 400:1 is all you'll ever need, but was previously under the impression that 800:1 or better is what you want. Who knows! I'm not an expert on this by any means, but I believe that every company has a different method of obtaining these numbers, so it can vary by brand.
