I understand that your camera only has buit in flash. But if you can borrow an external flash from someone, you can darken your room totally, set your camera to a long (15 sec for example) exposure and then flash manually from the side or bottom. Be sure your background is not too close to the smoke or put a black cardboard between flash and bg (so the light only hits the smoke)
