I'm going to second or third or fourth or whatever, this notion that extremely low scores (sub 4 maybe?) should be justified with mandatory comments. I don't know if the 5 region should require comments because for me 5 is an "average" photo. It's not painful to look at by any means, but doesn't necessarily attain compositional excellence. However, if I think I can offer insight (from my no-doubt immature/inexperienced opinion) on how to make the photo better I usually do.
I suspect if people who were rushing through voting slapping 2-4's or something on photos were forced to stop and actually write a comment that was more than a mono-syllabic word like "bad" "sucks", etc., they might actually think a bit more and appreciate the photo for what it is (i.e. an average photo, rather than a bump in the road on the way to exceptional photos...because even decent photos can look awful after seeing a few great ones). |

Thank you, I will have to concur that 5ish is very average here. Perhaps the lack of comments has mushed my brain. But I agree with your suggestion above. Thanks for listening to me whine. Tammy |

it's my second challenge and it's a lot lower than my first. which sucks because personally, i think it's better. also, i've been asked for a validation.
i think people have been giving me low scores because they think i broke the rules or summat.
depressing.

To tell ya all the truth - I don't care if other people like my photo - A LONG AS I LIKE IT. Nice to get good comments and comments that help you, but I hate these "I AM BETTER THAN YOU" comments.
The way I comment - I first tell the person what is good about his photo - then I tell him where I THINK he/she can improve.
Why break him down? In most cases the photos I comment on is WAY better than my own.

I agree to an extent. I know I am not a good photographer, but on the otherhand photos are not just for "good" photographers to enjoy. Everyone can provide valid, constructive criticism on a photo, regardless of the quality of their own work. My comments on peoples' images as late have been rather long winded and specific but I never mean anything vicious/"I'm superior"/whatever about it, just things that I - as one member of the audience - think could make the image better. And I know, for instance in my images, that specific comments are helpful, i.e. constructive, than a sentence fragment that contains a nugget of advice but not much. But that doesn't mean a comprehensive critique is "tearing an image apart" or anything. |

I got this comment:
i think the selective coloring is against the rules and IMO does not add to the shot
What I did was desaturate some colors (in the entire image, not a selection) until only one was obvious - I had assumed this was legal, based on the rules and what I've read in the forums. Should I not worry about this comment? |

klstover - i did something similar with my image, although i only desaturated a couple channels so it may not have been as obvious as yours where only one color was present. however, i messaged the authorities to ask if that was allowed and they said yes as long as it was applied to the whole image, rather than spot editing.
i think people forget that adjusting individual color channels is very easy to do and not against the rules... |

Right. I think it'd be cool to be a member and know enough to do great things that look totally illegal and impressive and amaze everybody. (On the other hand, I've seen the complaining about being given low scores because people think the photo's against the rules.) |

as an art teacher and a qualified adjudicator for cambridge, i agree. constructive criticism isn't - 'oo, it's lovely' but - 'it's an interesting image, i like the exposure, but the composition could be improved if you cropped here, or shot from this angle, or burned here...'
i think i've figured out the best way for me to vote. i go through all the shots and vote very quickly - just the numbers. then, i look at the collated images, and decide if any should move up or down. then, i start at the lowest ranked images, and try to give constructive crits. i start at the lowest, so if i run out of time, those who need the crits the most get them... (not saying that higher rankers don't need crits, just lower ones need them more)
