Hi, I'm currently looking into possibly submitting work to stock media companies like Getty Images. I'm curious about what its like to work with a stock company in terms of how restrictive or unrestrictive it can be. Any experiences would be helpful. Which dealers are the best to work with? Ect... Thanks!

I'm assuming you want to do more traditional stock - not microstock?

Typically, microstock images sell from 20 cents to a dollar a download. It's more about selling more volume to smaller customers for less money.
Shutter Stock (see my signature) is considered one of the best. Also, istockphoto.com.
There are continuous arguments here about microstock cheapening the price photogs get for thier photos. But, mostly microstock sales are to web sites and small run publishers.

Are you free to just submit whenever you want to, or do they expect a certain amount of output from you on a regular basis? I'm looking for a company that can give that kind of freedom, as stock will almost certainly be a nice side venture to my commissioned work.

Yes, none of the microstock sites require regular uploads.
I used to hae a list of all the microstock sites, but can't find it at the moment.
But, I work with 123RoyaltyFree, Shutter Stcok (btw, if you use my link to sign up I'd really appreciate ;-) and istockphoto.com.

Stock Photography thread
There has been loads of discussion for many months on all facets of stock photography. Above are just two of numerous such threads on the site. As mentioned (and as you'll see if you reveiw these and similar threads), this can be a volatile subject here. But a very general, short answer to the question you imply is, yes, it can be done by hobbiest photographers. Good luck getting started.

Holy cow, Chris, I just looked at your profile and we are practically neighbors. I'm at work (on a break, actually) at the FAA behind Jerry's Ford in Leesburg, and I live just outside of Winchester. There are two informal get togethers planned for the area in the weeks to come, maybe you would like to attend one or both! Or drop me a PM if you want to go shooting sometime.
