Ok I ordered this one on the suggestion of the photography instructor at Morehead State University

I looked his over and though its 20 years old, seems to be in very good condition. Has anyone used this brand of tripod before?

Looks very similar to a Gitzo I used to use with my 35mm cam in the field. It was a decent tripod, bare bones. One thing, though; that's not a head that accepts a quick-release plate. Screwing the cam on and off every time you use it is a pain. Especially if you have a long lens with a tripod collar, and when you want to switch to it you have to unmount the camera and remount to the collar.

You can buy very nice Slik tripods in the same price range that have a quick-release plate...

Tiltall Quick Release Plate Assembly

Not sure how well this works because I havent used it yet

OK that'll work. The bottom part mounts on the 'pod, the top part on the cam. The lever pulls 'em together.

One thing to watch out for; a lot of these assemblies don't have any locks, so it's possible to accidentaly displace the lever and the cam takes a dive. If this is the case with the one you get, do this:

when you mount the camera on the tripod, slide the camera strap up a leg first. That way, if you're carrying the tripod over your shoulder and the lever comes loose, the strap will catch the camera.

thats a good idea, thanks for the advice. I am excited about getting this tripod, I have been using a tripod that wont keep the camera still with a long lens attached.

Another QR system to check out is the Velbon Magnesium plate. I've been using it for a short period of time and I love it. It's also the lightest QR system out there, yet because it uses Magnesium alloy, it's VERY rigid.

They made two different generations of this plate and the old one is clunky. The new one is more streamlined and fantastic.

I have 2 sets of these. One for my tripod head and one that I use for a portrait orientation tripod mount with a slider. I also sometimes use that portrait slider with a minitripod. Great for macro work.

Later, I will probably purchase an extra plate for dual camera situations.

Right, plus you want an extra mounting plate for any lens you have that uses a tripod mounting collar...

Oh yeah, I forgot about that too. My collar arrives in a week and a half too...

Dang I gotta get me a camera to mount it to! :)
