I am currently looking for a nice lens to accompany my new 5D. I will be shooting pretty much everything...with landscapes and nature being the majority. However, I don't have a billion dollars and I can't afford to buy 3 or 4 lenses.
Is the Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM a good choice? Or is the famed Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM with a cheaper Wide angle lens the better combo?? Which would serve me best in all applications? Sorry for the general questions.
Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

I'd say get the 70-200 2.8L IS and the 17-40 4.0L. Or possibly the 24-70 if you don't need a REALLY wide lens.
I've heard that zooms that cover much more than 3x lose quality at both ends.
Also maybe get the 50mm 1.4, it'd be a normal perspective on the 5D so it'd be good for most shots. |

I think you are correct, zoom lenses do lose quality at either end of their range. That is mostly why I asked the question.
The 70-200 2.8L and 17-40 4.0L was actually what I had in my mind. I will also look into the 50mm 1.4...thanks for the suggestions.
