I have a friend that's trying to download pictures to her computer from this camera. She's running XP on a Dell, and it sees the deivce, but won't recognize what it is... She doesn't have any of the original software, as it was a hand-me-down camera, if you will...

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

The drivers and software are available here

But it says the drivers should not be required for WinXP as the camera connects in DSC mode. In other words, it should just be a case of connecting the camera and WinXP will automatically see it as another drive letter.

Have you tried a different USB cable, or a different USB port?

I tried all those drivers, and I've tired on two different PCs with XP SP2 on them... with no luck... It sees the camera, but calls it "unknown usb device" or something similar...

does the camera have to be in some certain mode?

Truthfully, nobody dos it that way - for $20 you cna get a card reader tha reads just about every card out there and is lots faster than connecting the camera and you don't wear down your camera batteries.

and you don't have to install any software so when you change cameras there's nothing to conflict or delete.

I personally haven't used anything other than a card reader in years, and that's what I told her too, but she was hoping to save a few bucks, I guess...
