I need to get a battery so I can make my monolight portable. does anyone have a suggestion...preferably a cheap suggestion...
The monolights I have are Sp Systems Excalibur models. Sp Systems makes a battery pack specifically for these but it is around $160...I was hoping to find a slightly cheaper solution...

Well, even though nobody bothered to respond to me, I am going to share the solution I found.
After looking around at the rather expensive battery power supplies that are made specificly for studio lights I stumbled across a product made by black and decker (also avaible under the Vector brand) called the elctromate 400. This thing has all kinds of crap on it I don't need like a tire inflator and car jump starter but it does have a battery with a power inverter that offers up 400 watts. This is fine for the type of studio lights I have. I haven't tried to do a full shoot with it yet but I did hook it to one of my monolights and fired off about 15 flashes without any trouble. Only real drawbacks I see so far is the weight (wouldn't want to be doing a shoot where I was just wandering around or had to walk far with it) and the recycle time is about 5 seconds if my monolight is on full power (320 Ws). The best part of this thing was I just bought it at wal mart so if there is any issue I can take it back easily and it only cost $100.
Hopefully there is no downside...like it frying my light...but for that I will just have to wait and see... |
