Ok, now lots of folks post disappointed threads after a challenge because they didn't get the score they hoped for.
I didn't get the score I hoped for, but I honestly don't care because I like the pic.
However, I will say that while I'm happy to get positive comments (4 of them so far), I am somewhat at a loss as to what I could have done differently.
Can anyone help me out and give me some constructive criticism?
Or if you really can't be positive about it, just tell me why you think it sucks :).
I took this picture in 3 separate shoots, each time getting a "money shot" and each time, improving the picture.
The submitted pic came from my last shoot, not too many hours before the deadline.
My learning curve on this one was HUGE. I moved from crappy looking pics that were fuzzy and blurry to a pic that (in the original) had definition in my eyebrow hairs and had fairly decent color.
There were definitely some things I think I could have done better, but I don't think that they would have had a huge impact on the overall picture as many of these things have already been corrected in PP.
This is my first advanced editing submission.
THANKS! |

I can't really think of anything negative to say about it, it was a really good idea and I think you executed it well. The lighting might be a little too reddish, but I'm not sure about that.
I guess it just wasn't the type of image most of the voters were expecting, so they just clicked a low score to keep going through? (I didn't vote, but I do think it's a cool idea) |

I think it looked a little freaky and creepy after awhile?
Sorry, just my personal opinion. |

The picture's very well-done technically, so you did accomplish that. I think it's just clowny/fr4eaky and didn't appeal to people. It's very odd the way the mouth shape echoes, inverted, the nose shape. The eyes are strange.
Bear in mind that in this challenge people were looking for literary allusions, and yours may well have slipped right over their heads. I took it to be a young man being "amazed" by the pulp magazine "Amazing Stories" at first, before I realized it was actually a book.
In any case, the challenge was to "Photograph a scene, title, characterization, or quote from a book." And you simply failed to do that; you photographed someone's reaction to an unspecified book. So I imagine that had quite a bit to do with your score, as well; technically it's very good, but it's kind of off-topic I think.
Robt.

Thanks guys for the help on this one.
I really appreciate the technical nod from Bear.
It's certainly an interesting experience being both model and photographer. Even more so when it's in the dark :) (as in too dark to see yourself on the camera's flip-out LCD.
As you can probably tell by my exhaustive process report on the pic, I was rather unsure of myself going into this one. Each pic I have taken lately has represented a monstrous leap forward in technique.
To be honest, I was thinking a bit of a Bible quote or something "Your word is a light...." or something, but then I thought that it applied to so many other books that it might just provoke thought in a wider audience if I left it open.
My guess is that I would have lost points on either side of the fence, as there are plenty who don't like Bible reference pics.
I was kinda thinking that in this open-ended form, it might be sliding off the edge of the Challenge topic.
Thanks for the confirmation of this.
Incidentally, I started working on this a couple of months ago as a cover for a personal study project notebook.
In my own mind, my meaning was clear, but since I submitted it, I've showed a few people and some of them also said that they felt it was kinda creepy.
They didn't see the outtakes :) YIKES! I am not a pretty man. |
