I was going to enter this shot into the education challenge but wasn't sure if it would be within the rules. I changed to grayscale then put that copy on top of the colour one and rubbed out the pencil area to show the colour. Is this using layers? I asume it is and thats why I pulled it out. If by any chance it would have been legal, do you think it would have done any good? Thanks :)

No because that would of been spot editing which is Illegal in basic challenges.

not the way you did it. Making another layer that contains pixel data is not allowed under basic editing. Under the learn menu there is a tutorial showing a basic editing legal way to do this, but it requires the subject to be isolated color-wise.
