Anyone know how to silent a loud fan?
My video card fan is making a grinding noise, and I blew it out with compressed air a few times..
Its not that old of a card about 8 months--
Its a pretty decent card too-- Radeon X700 256 Meg DDR, PCI Express.
Im sure its under warranty from manufacter being less than a year old, but I dont wanna send it back and resort to onboard video --
Any suggestions?

Loosen the mounting screws on it so it wobbles around or glue a little mini-playing card next to it with the corner of the card hitting the fan blades - it will sound like the bicycle you had as a kid.
edit: Sorry- I just read the thread title only.

Those little low-profile fans on video cards tend to die pretty easily. Go to a local computer store and pick up a little 40mm fan, screw it into the recessed areas on the heatsink of the card. |

I actuallt used to be Die-Hard Nvidia, but this card was the best bang for the buck on the PCI_express platform at the time..
Performance is fine-- And Heat is also fine, still running cool-- Its just dam annoyning..

Well, the ones that come on the cards aren't always 40mm, but you can almost always screw a 40mm onto the heatsink...
Maybe bring the card in just to be sure. Oh, and you'll typically have the fan pointing down, to push air onto the heatsink and through the fins. |

Make sure there are no wire that get in the fan when you put the computer case door back. |

You could just dump a bunch of cooking oil in your case and not worry about using cooling fans:
