I get err01 with my 17-40 just about everytime I put it on. This has happened since I got it. Detach and re-attach and it works fine. No problems with any other lens. I've never cleaned the contacts on the cam or my lens before so I thought I would give a try.

This problem can cause the infamous 'err 99'. I've read Canon recommend using a pencil rubber (eraser!) over them gently, getting rid of all the grease and gunk that can accumulate. Seems to work!
