I have a friend who is tired of the lag time issue with P&S cameras but he does not want to go the DSLR route. His P&S is about four years old so I'm sure technology has gotten better on this issue. He leaves in June on a trip to the Galapagos Islands and would like to buy a new camera before that.
Can you help me with a recommendation on a P&S that has little to no lag time?

The CoolPix 8700 is reasonably responsive. My only issue with it is that it does not like to focus in low light.

I may be wrong but I thought some of the Ricoh models had very quick shutter response times??

he should be looking at cameras with a shutter lag of 0.5 seconds or less.
I found that the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T1 has an impressive shutter lag time of 0.35 seconds. Might wanna take a look.
EDIT: if he doesn't mind bulky Point&shoot cameras, then the camera I'm using has a shutter lag time of 0.01 seconds, as stated in the DPreview website.

If he needs a tiny little p&s, I love my Nikon 7900. I teach 5 year olds who tend to move very quickly and was pleased with both startup and shutter lag times, though I can't quote what they might be.

| My Pentax Optio WPi has a 0.05 sec lag time. When I first got it (and being used to my Oly C-720's lag time) I was still missing shots, but now it was because I was taking them before the anticipated action happened! I now use the WPi for places my dSLR couldn't or shouldn't go (like underwater) but it's nice that it basically focuses and captures a frame as quickly as my D70s. It can also start up and take a shot in under 1 sec. |

Thanks to all for the input. I have passed on your suggestions and links to DPReview. I also made him an offer for him to buy a D50 body and I would loan him a lens. If when he got back he did not want to keep it I would buy it from him as I could always use a second body.
