| Just wondering if anybody has tried to locally sell their photos as notecards. My idea is to pack them individually and sell them for around 2 or 3$. The question is, how do I find ways to sell them? Anybody done this before, and how did you find your way? Thanks for any suggestions you might have. |

I think I have the perfect solution! I just found this out :0)
Shutterfly has them for sale
My cost- bulk ordering
6.99/12 or 7.99/12
And they will print your company logo or name on back. You have to buy 250 or 350 at once (prepay) but you can print 12 at a time- meaning tons of images

One note card for $3?
Have you found a market like this? Seems high end specialty boutique type of thing/place.
mpix.com, winkflash.com, whcc.com all sell cards - i have no expereince with quality or cost.

If you've got nature shots or local interest photos, try a local museum or tourism office or maybe even a local tourist attraction like a state park.
Or you could try selling on commission (or renting space) at a local antique shop.
Just a couple of thoughts...

I have come across lots of places I can get this kind of thing printed but really not sure whether there is a big market.
You could try selling online on your own site, via sites such as ebay and also approach local stationery and crafts stores to ask if they would stock your cards. The trouble is that most are tied into suppliers already and may not be willing to bother with the additional paperwork of selling just a low volume for such a small scale supplier.

I package mine with five notecards, five envelopes in a poli bag that seals nicely. It makes for a nice presentation. I print them out on good card stock on my Canon i9900. They are modest notecards with good envelopes, and I sell them for $8 the package. Others in our brand new gallery make slightly outsized cards and sell them for around $5-$7 each.
All have been selling nicely since we opened two weeks ago.

Not high at all. $3 is quite reasonable for art. Have you priced Hallmarks cards lately?? $3 is near the lower end for them! I've seen other art notecards going from $2.50-4.50 each. I've been selling mine at art shows for $3.00 each or buy 5 get one free (i.e. $15 for 6) and have done well. The shop that sells them for me sells them for a bit more at $3.50 because of commission fees. The materials cost me $1/card which I guess is fairly high but I buy my stock from Red River and print them myself. The $1 also includes the ink and clear bag that I put them in. I have the R1800 printer so have been printing my own. That way I can print 2 or 20 and print them when I need them. It also allows me to have a larger variety without being constrained to 5 styles because I had to buy quantities in the hundreds. I inlcude the image id, title, my name, website, etc. on the backs of all of my cards. With PhotoShop it's easy.
Here's a sample of a card I make:
It's not something you'll get rich at but if you're just looking to make a few extra bucks, try it. Visit some locals stores and see what they say. I currently have cards, magnets, prints, and framed art in several shops/stores. It's nice to get the unexpected checks. Recently one of my shops closed up...so I walked a block down the street, talked to the lady and voila! I was in. :-)

If you don't want to have printed cards you can always get prints made and adhere them to the stock. I personally like the printed cards better but it's a personal thing.

I started out using them but found it to be a real pain! First you have to get the prints, then peel back the adhesive strips, then place the photo so everything shows thru the window, then fold, then press, then stuff in the baggy...WAY too time consuming for me and that's why I stopped using them. The quality is good and they have a nice variety. I don't really care for the textured stock though. I'm much happier printing my own.
Just something to consider.

| Thanks for your tips. I am printing them on my computer, and the size is 5x7, complete with envelope and plastic wrap. I will try and see who might be interested around here, and find out if any of the small craft shops might be interested. So far I have a portfolio of about 20 notecards, 2 copies of each. I figure I will bring the whole portfolio and if anybody wants to sell them they will have quite a selection to choose from. Still printing more, but finding the right kind of images for notecards is harder than I thought. |
