I have been looking for a really good lens for shooting wildlife with, and today was given the opportunity to purchase one used from a member off fredmiranda.com
The lens:
Sigma 50-500mm f/4.0-6.3 EX DG HSM
I saved a $100 by purchasing this used - although he says he only has taken bout 50 shots with it. He bought a 5D which due to the full frame sensor the lens is not compatible - you get vignetting with it.
I can hardly wait for it to arrive. Soon our winter will be ending and I'm hoping the family of bears we had last year will come back looking for food again. This is gonna rock!

You should indeed be excited, the Bigma is loved by just about everyone who has used one.

I'm now having to use 2 camera bags. Hiking with all this should get me in pretty good shape over the summer.

A backpack is a great way to carry camera gear. some bags hold a lot, unless you pshizzy then they hold everything LOL
the 50-500 shouldn't vignette on a FF sensor, according to the sigma site. Their DC lenses are for the APS sizes sensors, the DG are just digitally optimized (aka coated lenses and such). I have heard a few people complain about vignetteing on the 5D with several different lenses, so it might just be the 5D.
a friend had that lens and liked it, until he had that ching for the canon 500 f4. lots better he says, but for 5X the cost it had better be!
Enjoy your new lens!

One of my bags is the Tamarac Velocity 9 - a great backpack, but not big enough for the collection I'm slowly putting together.

If you love to shoot wildlife and birds your going to love the long lens. I can't live without my Tamorn 200-500, uless of course someone wants to replace it with a Nikon 200-400 F4 VR!
I never put it in a bag when I'm out. I normally attach it to a heavy duty monopod using a quick release and use the monopod as a walking stick. The lens does fit in my Tamrac Expedition 7 backback though so I can swithc it out if needed.
Have fun!

Congratulations Linda...I have this lens for my D200 and it is sharp as a tack and beautiful contrast and colours...also HSM is fast. It gets heavy, but you can get your pugs to help there :-)
I use mine at the football and have taken some amazing shots with it, some are in my portfolio.
My wife stirs me up about it..she says I have a "my lens is bigger than yourr" syndrome
Enjoy...you'll get a great workout lugging that thing around.

Just be careful that you don't drop your Bigma like I did. It was an expensive repair. They don'tike falling on the ground from a metre in the air. Mine fell on the back lens cap and stopped working. Cost of repair: $209 and several months.
