Personally, I am generally very anti-stud. They have their place, but the benefits they provide are applicable under a very narrow set of conditions, which, depending on where you live, may not occur very frequently. Compared to a good snow tire studded tires offer little advantage in deep/fresh snow. On bare pavement, studs actually decrease grip and can have a dramatic impact on stopping distance. They also do damage to roads (over time), are bad for gas mileage, and are bloody noisy to boot. I would contend that a modern snow/ice tire isn't far behind studs on ice, without the compromises, though of course there are definitely locales where studs do make the most sense.

This made my heart race as I read it.....I am so glad things worked out well... Give Cammie and Logan an extra hug from us as well. This brings back memories of when my oldest three children were small and we had a rollover under similar circumstances - also on March 13 (1982) in the New Mexico mountains. A spring storm caught us on the way down and we did the same thing - rolled our VW camper and landed on our roof. We were very far from help - my husband started walking and I wrapped the children (5, 3, and 6 months)in sleeping bags and waited (3 hours) until a car came along and took us in. I thought I held things together pretty well until the people came by to help us, and then I totally fell apart. We too, were fortunate to not have serious injuries, but it was a long time before I wanted to drive in the mountains again, and I must admit, I am superstitiously careful on March 13. I, too, am zealous about seatbelts and child restraints, and also am very thankful for guardian angels and the good samaritans who stopped on a snowy mountain road to help us out.

Reassure your wife that sometimes these things just happen. Black ice is so treacherous because you can't see it until you are on it. Logan will remember this as an adventure, if he remembers it at all, in a few years.

Hope the rest of your year is especially wonderful!! Take good care.

WOW! What a cool thing to wake up to this morning. Thank you all for the kind words and sound advice. It's really weird how so many people in different locations can all have similar events happen to them, it's very reassuring to read all the stories and know that things will just work themselves out.

I got to play chauffeur today. Got Cammie and Logan to work / daycare. It was rather nice to tell you the truth. ;-) I'll make sure to give Cammie and Logan some extra hugs today for sure!
