I am looking at these meters:
sekonic L358
Konica Minolta VF
Is one better than the other?
Strong/weak points of either?
Primary use will be studio and on location flash use with the need to read/calc ambient light.
I have never used a meter, and simple is best IF is does the job. I just know from expereince with otehr things in life some brands are just more intuitive to use than others, and I have no ability to see these in person.
Any other brand in this price range (200-250) that I should also consider?

Personally, I would pick the Sekonic, but for a reason that is probably irrelevant to you. It has the ability to read multiple pops of the strobe and tell you what f stop you need. Not useful for photographing people or anything else that moves, but if you want to shoot at f64 or so and have maxed out the power on your strobes, you can just fire the flash over and over until you have built up enough exposure.
When I was working, I had the top of the line Minolta, the Flashmeter IV (I think that was the model) and it did all of that.
As for being intuitive, they're all pretty simple really.

I just posted some thoughts on this in the thread on the Tokina 12-24 for Canon that you posted on Prof.
Go have a look.
It's just ramblings from little old me, but maybe there's something you can appreciate. |
