This was my submitt to Square crop and it ended in the bottom 10 places. I only got 9 comment and around 3 or 4 comments of those can teach me something.
Please take a second and look at my picture and comment becuase we are all here to learn.

I left a comment also birgir. Just wasn't my cup of tea, but if you're happy with it then that's cool. :)

What I see is an expressionless face staring at me with just one eye visible. I find that slightly disturbing.
At first I thought it was a statue or mannequin. It took a few seconds to sink in that I was looking at a real face. White lips like that almost make it look 'dead', which was unsettling.
But, each to their own. That's art, Art! :) |

Thank you for commenting.
I am not crying here because of low score, just asking for few more comments because I will learn from them. :)
But thanks for taking your time to comment. |

There is really nothing wrong with the technical quality of the image. You have a nice solid white background, the desat on the eye is done well and appears that you achieved what you intended. The hair is a bit oversharpened but not very much.
There are a combination of factors that affected this image. This most visible is that the high key look leaves the face washed out. Most viewers like to see detail on the face, especially in an image that has very little else to look at.
Selective desaturation is a good technique but should be used for a discernable purpose and most viewers, like me, do not know why you used it in this image.
Though this challenge is essentially a free study you really don't take advantage of the "squareness" of the crop, your picture would have essentially been the same no matter what crop was chosen for it. You can hardly be faulted for that since few people did take advantage of the crop but it would have helped yours some if you had.
But mostly the image confuses the viewer. It is unnecessary that viewers completely understand an image to appreciate it but they need to know what the questions are. In this case viewers have no idea what you are trying to say in your composition. When viewers do not know what an image is about they will rate it lower.
There are no specific suggestions that can be made that would improve your image. It is not a question of technical quality. You picture simply lacks a connection with the viewer.
What is most important in any composition is to ask yourself what you want the viewer to get out of it then use photographic technique to make your point.
