Anybody have an idea what we're calling negatives these days?
"original digital files" seems a bit lengthy...

EXIF.

I don't think my clients would even know what that meant!
...come to think of it- I don't even know what it means!!! :0)

f=file got that I'm good huh? :0P

from my contract sorely in need of revision:

"If all photographs and negatives are accepted at the time of presentation there will be no dispute for any sum later on."

EXIF= Exchangable Image File
03/12/2006 04:50:29 PM · #7
EXIF is only the data about the file, exposure settings and such.

RAW, if the photo was taken as such, is the photo data.

RAW has many times been referred to as the equivalent to a negative, because of its flexibility in post.

In comparison, JPEG (and TIFF) have been equated to slide (transparency) film, because for the most part, they are in final form straight from the camera.

I would imagine there are numerous individuals on this site that have pondered this same question. Perhaps if the thread was titled a bit different? "Film vs Digital contract rewrite?"

Good luck. ;^)

"Unlike JPEG and TIFF, RAW is not an abbreviation but literally means "raw" as in "unprocessed". "

I don't think there's any other thread out there about this one but I think I can come up with something :0)

That makes perfect sense- so why have I been capitalizing it all this time?!?! :0P
03/13/2006 04:43:29 PM · #14
Probably because file extensions are generally capitalized?
Even though most of the time the RAW files seem to have other extensions, like .CR2 or whatever...

I wonder, if it was spelled upper/lowercase, if every reference would be caught by filters looking for XXX movies ...

What's really stupid is that there's been a format in Photoshop since about version 2 (circa 1990) called Raw (*.RAW) which I don't think is the same thing ...

It should make no (functional) difference if the filename extension is capitalized or not.
