I read about the quoted below from this article. Dont have a camera to try now, but anyone tried it? What do you see? Sample photos?
"This is something I learned from the legendary Pentax technical guru and Mensch of the Mountain Don Nelson. Tear a corner off the sticky part of a Post-It note so that you've got a bit of paper about the size of a pea. Stick it on your lens. Now look through the viewfinder. Surprised? Okay, so stop worrying about that little speck, then." |

Well, my 8700 has quite a few nicks in the lens and none show in the photos. That is what he was trying to get at.
The big problem with nicks is when shooting into bright light, they are more prone to lens flare.

so maybe I should keep the UV filter for special occasions, eh? like shooting in harsh conditions... |

Not sure about the FinePix, but the ED lens on the Coolpix 8700 is actually plastic. And, I like to play with macro mode a lot, so it has bumped a few objects.
Not to mention... a few hot sparks from a grinder for a certain pic. :-)

On the Finepix, it's Fujinon glass :) Thanks
Oh I know which grinder pic you were referring to, nice one!
edit: wish I could get a free model to shoot nudes someday, LOL!

Shot a couple of quick tests with a little piece of paper sitting on the lens, focused at the ceiling. They weren't the same shutter speed, one was 1/25 and the other 1/30... and I didn't point it at the exact same place. Just shows what you'd see with that experiment anyway. It got me thinking though, since the one without filter looks sharper than the one with the Tiffen UV filter on... I'll do a couple tests with the same settings and post the results.

That part is easier than you'd think.

I should so write a how-to article on it... LOL
It's not hard. It's just a matter of establishing a repour(sp?) with the young lady.
You don't start out with, I want to shoot you nude. You know, do portraits, sexy dress shots, swimsuit shots, work your way up to it. You'll know if and when she'll want to do nudes.
I do quite a bit of nudes. So, it's easier now. I have the portfolio. And a lot of my clients approach me from seeing shots I've done for thier friends.
I started by running an ad in a local college newspaper. I was a student at the time, so it wasn't as creepy... LOL. It worked out that I had a wonderful model named Samantha that contacted me. We worked together on quite a few projects, some for local advertising for bars and such.
Now, and this is not for the faint at heart, I use myspace with much success. But, with all the stories of Myspace rape and abductions, you have to be real sensitive and slow there.

OK, did a few tests with and without the UV filter. Looks like I'll be leaving it at home unless I need it to protect the lens from dirt or spray or something. Have yet to try it with my 70-210 but I will probably tomorrow.
The results, along with camera settings and etc, if anyone's interested:
