It is a good camera, but most users already have a D70, I guess? |

I have a D70. As far as I can see, it is only slightly better (different) than the D50.
I think the feel and most of the inner workings are close. The 70 takes great shots like this:
I'd like to know more about the D50 also. So I'll mark this post and follow. Good luck on your search.

There are 375 owners of D50 here, including myself!
Its a great camera, haven't had any problems with it so far!

I'm sure this guy loves his.
FWIW, I was in the market for a D50 before I went with the 300D. The deciding factor was that I got a really good deal on the 300D from a friend.

I also own a D50. WONDERFUL camera and not at all that much different than the D70 other than physical size and a few options. Same sensor as the 70 as well.
I'm not sure if I do it justice but here are a couple of my shots taken with the D50 that IMHO ROCK!

Well, speaking of which... I just got the D50 last weekend, and I noticed that when I cleaned off my card, the files started saving with DSC0001 again. Any way I can keep that from happening? I have no idea how many shots I've taken, and if I get a 2nd disk and start both empty on a given day, my filing system will be all out of whack. Thanks! :) |

I don't know how it works on the Nikon, but there's a menu setting on the Canon you can choose which will number sequentially rather than starting over each time. |

They look great naldslc. Maybe I need to start taking my pictures in portrait rather than landscape orientation so I get better shots? :P |

Yes, there is a menu setting for the pic number. |

I have a D50, still learning to use it! But it is considerably nicer to use than my ancient Kodak/Nikon DCS460 and considerably more versatile than my Nikon CP8800. Someone else mentioned the D50 having the same sensor as the D70...there are some differences but not any that are significant, Sony makes them both. The D50 may be slightly lower noise than the D70 and I do wish Nikon had kept the ISO range of the D70 at the low end. The D50 won DIWA's "PLATINUM AWARD" recently, not sure why, probably just politics! |

Menu > Setup > File Seq. No.
I think this is what you are looking for.

You mean sequential numbering? Go to menu => down to settings (the little wrench) and scroll to File No. Seq. and turn it on.
P.S. Thx for the complements on my "portraits" I do also attempt landscapes, hehe.

Check you user manual. I know Nikon makes it so that you have to have the equivalent of a Doctorate degree to read it, but the answer is there. You can choose how, and in what sequence your images are named by the camera.
There are also plenty of guide books available that are written in plain english. Check out Amazon.com online or go to Barnes and Noble. |

Thanks everyone.. I finally found it. I had to turn some other setting from simple to something else before the sequential option (and about 400 other options) showed up in the menus. I was getting frustrated since I saw it in the manual but couldn't figure out how to get to it.

I'm new to this forum but I have a D50 and I love it. Eventually I plan on moving up to the D200 but if I did that now I'd definitely have more camera than skills (not to mention I can't really afford it at the minute). But I'm very happy with it. I bought body separately and picked out a good lens, and then another lens, and then another lens... unfortunately I live close to B & H Photo. :)

Welcome to DPC and Team Nikon Jacqueline! I'm sure you'll find this little place we all call home a very fun and knowledgeable site.
I can't wait to start seeing some of your work. Post up some pics!

I would get a D50 except it takes a different memory card from every other dSLR. I've got 4 CF memory cards! Actually, if my brother decides not to keep his D70 (he just got the D2X), I'm hoping he'll give it (sell it cheap) to his favorite little sister. |

That makes perfect sense, when I make the move in the near future to something new (dreaming of the D200) it's going to be another small fortune to get me setup with CF cards. ;-)

The D200 looks like a really sweet camera. But, I really think my next camera will be a Canon. |
