I have a collection of music CDs, mostly classic rock, from my youth (mostly). I have not listened to them in oh, 5 years easy. I ripped everything to the computer.

So as hard as it is, I figured i'd sell them and take the $150 ro so i'd get and buy a backdrop.

WELLL, CDs are worthless. I was fiiguring $2-3 each, maybe a bit more for the doubles.

Ha ha ha. The joke's on me i guess. One place would take them all - at $1 each. The other place only wanted 32 of them, but were generous at $42.

I know jewelry stores have large markups, and i guess used CD stores do too. They are seling them for $6-8 each and paying $1-1.50.

Hmmm...flea market?? Ebay? Even at $2 each I'll make more cash than at a store. Lotta work to sell them on ebay...perhaps i'll just keep thej ewel boxes and throw out the CDs.

You can burn all of them to DVD and send me the DVD's. As for the CD's...Give them to your local public library and use it as a tax write-off.

Hmmm... i like that idea. donate them.
I may sell some on ebay - the 34 the one store was willing to pay for anyway.

Perhaps i need an ebay store? Something new to try.

Hell, I have a pile of books and 2 boxes of stuff to sell on ebay. All to buy photographic toys - you'd think that's motivate me, huh?

a third strobe
a tokina 12-24
a canon 100 2.8 macro
well, that's a quick grand right there. LOL

Yeah, we're really big on donating stuff to the library. It's my favorite charity. As for an eBay store....I don't have a clue how that would work. I've sold a couple of items, but nothing close to requiring a store. You'll have to get help elsewere for that.

As for buying more photo stuff....Go right ahead. It's great to have new "toys". But don't forget to send me the DVD's.

But for the financial situation, this would raise an interesting ethical point. Is there any difference between 1) buying CDs, ripping them and selling them on and 2) downloading pirated copies of the music in the first place?

Legally, there is no difference (except that the scale of the copying does not make it worthwhile enforcing practically: you are only making one copy of each CD). Piracy-defenders might argue that at least the musician is getting one sale for the two listeners.

That's just what I was thinking; what if people BUY fresh, hot, new CD's, burn 'em to the 'puter, then sell them the next day at 50% of list? Seems vaguely shady :-)

Hell, you can get 20 freinds together, each pay a dollar to buy the CD, burn it 20x, and THEN sell it at 50%...

But what do I know? I can't hear. And anyway this is pretty irrelevant to the situation at hand...

you should just keep them, you know the moment you sell them for "decent" money, your ipod/computer/mp3 player are all going to shit the bed and you will have no music. its called murphy's law, it will happen.

Yes, ripping them and then selling them is some form of piracy I suppose. BUT i don 't feel bad about it BECAUSE it's all about the MONEY.

See, the artist got paid when i bought the CD. They get no more money now no matter what I do.

SO i sell it to Joe Blow for $2. Perhaps he would have bought a new one and the artist would have made money, but maybe not. Besides, this is what the used CD stores do now, so show cares if i do it.

So i kept a copy to listen to. The artist made his money. Whether i keep the CD or not, listen to it 24/7 for years or never again, it matters not.

It only matters if the artist (really the record company) loses a sale. I have a copy - I am not buying another, so they are not losing a sale.

they loose a sale if you give it to someone who would have bought it.
