The Duncan Miller Gallery and the Julia Dean Photo Workshops are proud to present the work of renowned photographer Marc Riboud. (//duncanmillergallery.com/riboud.html)
The exhibition and guest speaker event will highlight his images from around the world. Having traveled the globe, and been witness to the atrocities of war, poverty, and oppressive governments; Riboud’s images managed to capture his compassion for the human spirit. Riboud has a deep passion for seeing; seeing beyond the obvious and finding everyday occurrences beautiful. Riboud’s images however are not without humor. Many are ironic juxtapositions that make the viewer smile. He has photographed stars and presidents and diplomats. Yet it is his images of the streets and of the peasants, of the overlooked and unwanted, as well as of the poor and of the homeless for which he has become recognized. Riboud states, “When luck comes my way and offers me a good picture, joy is surely at hand.”
Born in 1923, and an engineer by training, at thirteen Riboud was given his father’s vest pocket Kodak, which allowed him to take his first pictures and fueled his curiosity for the world. As luck would have it, Riboud’s brother fell in love with a young poet, Nicole Cartier Bresson. This led to the meeting of Riboud and Henri Cartier Bresson, who would become his mentor in life and photography. Thanks to Cartier Bresson, Riboud was able to join Magnum in 1952 and work under the great Robert Capa. Between 1955 and 1986, Marc Riboud would travel the globe. Unlike many photojournalists whose visitations generally extend only within the confines of their given assignment, Riboud on the other hand took the proverbial stroll. Collecting visual surprises that dotted his route, Riboud explains, “One thing is certain: I’m always on the look-out for surprise, for just the right note, whether comical or moving.” At a time when photographers had something to show their audience, Riboud’s images captured the essence and turmoil of far away lands and strange people. His compositions are strong and graphic, yet there is compassion toward humanity that also surfaces. “Photography,” he has said, “must not try to be persuasive. It cannot change the world, but it can show the world, especially when it is changing.”
Riboud’s photographs have appeared in numerous magazines, including Life, Geo, National Geographic, Paris-Match, and Stern. He twice won the Overseas Press Club Award, and has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Riboud’s photos are in the collections of many leading museums, including the New York Metropolitan, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. His work has been the subject of many publications and monographs, including Photographs at Home & Abroad, 1988 (Abrams), Capital of Heaven, 1989 (Doubleday); 40 years of Photography in China, 1997 (Abrams); and 50 Years of Photography, 2005 (Flammarion). Marc Riboud continues to live and work in France.
