Just a real Quick Digital Image Pro (suite) tip

Not the best shot (100mm Macro) but you get the idea.

Your recipe will vary as there a plenty of brushes and effects to apply.

Open your shot in Digital Image Pro
Work it for Exposure, Levels, Sharpness and crop.

Duplicate to new layer
Insure your picture is selected (dotted line border) and press CTRL+D to duplicate to a new layer.
You now have two layers in the Stack Column.
Note: The one with gray background is the one you are working on.

Add Grunge to top Layer
Click on the Top Layer in the Stack.
From the Effects drop-down > Filters > All Filters
From the Select a Filter Category; Drop-down choose Chalk
From the visible filters choose Chalk: Bright on Black
Click on Advanced Options...
Click the Brush: > and select the nasty brush of your choice.
Mess around with Transparency if you wish, I chose 25.
Click Done to exit Advanced Options and Done again to exit filters

Bring detail through top layer by adding transparency
Make sure your top layer is selected (will have gray background in the stack)
From the Effects drop-down > Transparency > Even...
Adjust to somewhere around 50%

Darken blotches on top layer Quick method (could use levels and Curves)
Click on the bottom layer in the Stack column.
From the Effects drop-down > Emphasize...
I choose Darken from the filter list to make the spottage a little darker.
Click Done...

Flatten the Stack
Back at the workspace area press CTRL+A (select all)
Right Mouse Click on your photo and select Flatten Selected Objects

We are now at a place we can work it up a final time and/or Save as a new file.
