I went to shoot a water skier today and met a gentleman taking photos for a house going up for sale. I talked to him for a few minutes and he said that after taking your photos and d/l them to laptop/pc/whatever, he suggested re-formatting your card to wipe off everything. He read somewhere that this would make them last longer AND the new photos your shooting wouldn't 'mix' with the data from previous photos. Sounds like that makes sense. Anyone have their opinion or fact?

Not something I'd look to doing - I have been using the same CF card for two and a half years with two different cameras taking over 10,000 pics in RAW and have had no issues with it and no "mixed" data.

As far as I am aware the CF card is no different from a computer's hard disk - and you don't reformat that every time you delete a file off it.

He may be talking about his line of work where he doesn't want old undeleted pics of houses on his CF card that he may confuse with the pics he has taken today. (edited to add this para)

No, but many people recommend "optimizing" it with software every so often, to re-organize the data and speed up performance by placing more related data in contiguous blocks of the drive.

If you often delete just some files while leaving others, reformatting may be a good idea, but if you typically copy all the files from the card to disk and then delete them from the card (like I do) then it's probably not necessary -- I don't think I've ever reformatted a card either, even when switching betweeen cameras.

Sports Illustrated recommends their shooters reformat cards rather than use the "erase images" option //www.siphoto.com/?canon1DM2.inc

I don't erase the images in the camera; I do it with the card in a reader on the computer.

But then, SI needs to have a standard procedure among many photographers and cameras. It may also be a security procedure, to make sure cards are empty of old photos if lost.

alittle off-topic, but do you guys know that when you format or erase your card, the data are still retrievable?

Always overwrite it a few times (or use those freeware erasing softwares) before selling off your card to another person, or even loaning it off - unless you dont really mind risking the data being retrieved by someone at a later stage. We have had success retrieving very old data from used (erased and rewritten on) harddisks that has been used many years!

edit: typo
