Hi all,

I was thinking about trying to get my hands on the new Nikon 18-200mm VR lens. I know they are extremely hard to find right now, but if I were able to get one, is there any reason I should keep my 18-70 kit lens? I suspect the optics in the 18-200 are superior to to the kit lens, so I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I wanted some reassurance that that decision is the correct one.

Thanks for the help.

I'm not a pixel peeper anyway, so in reality, they should produce the same image as far as an 8x10 or whatever is concerned...

That being said, I wouldn't trade my 18-70 and my 80-200 for an 18-200. The 18-70 may be inline with the 18-200, but there's no way the 18-200 does what the 80-200 (or 70-200) can do. If I had an 18-200 I would never buy an 80-200 and wouldn't know what it was capable of.

I think you'd end up having your 18-200 on more often than not, and sooner or later not see a point in using your 18-70 or your 80-200...I say keep what you got, you're better off.

Thanks deapee, I certainly would never get rid of my 80-200. The only reason I was thinking about the 18-200 is that I am planning a trip to Europe this fall, so I kind of wanted to only have to carry one lens.

I bet you're right about never using the 80-200 once I put on the 18-200. I guess the f/2.8 will be the one benefit of the 80-200 (and some optical quality). Anyway, thanks for your input.
