The proposal:
1-Display on the voting page, "In-depth review requested" if the submitter clicked the "I would like an indepth critique on my submission" check box when they submitted it.
2-DO NOT display this message if the current average score for the image is above 5.8 or some other decided score. High scoring images already get enough comments and don't need further encouragement.
This way voters will know that a person wants an in-depth review during the voting process and will be encouraged to do so for the images that need comments the most.
Currently in-depth review requests only go to the Critique Club.
Right now giving "useful" comments during voting is a hit and miss prospect for the voter. They have no idea whatsoever if the recipient wants their work critiqued at all and can result in wasted time for the voter.
This could also reduce the "I don't get enough good comments", the "I don't comment because of negative feedback" and the "My comments are not appreciated" complaints we see here all the time.

I agree that something needs to be done.
We need to be careful though with discrimination which is something like what you have suggested.
My feeling on the subject is that you should be allowed to check the box only once in 10 challenges. When loading the page, it checks the previous 10 challenge entries and if there is a CC request, it greys out the box.
This would make people think more about if they really care about their image enough to request a CC.
Remember too that you can always use the forums for images you care about.

I like this idea, but we have to keep if from becoming too common - what if everyone (or even 85%) chose to have their images critiqued - now they know not all will be so critiqued, but if checkin the box got more comments in general during a challenge more people would check the box.
So to control this, I propose:
only the first 100 requests get the extra prompt during voting
OR
100 images that checked the box are randomly selected and only those get the prompt.

This subject comes up frequently, and I agree, something should be done about it. Many people have good suggestions that are worth considering. Here is a thought I have suggested before:
I think that the 'In depth critique requested' button should not be available when a person submits an entry. I think it should become available at rollover when the voting is done. For a couple of reasons. For one, people may decide that after the voting and commenting, they have enough feedback and do not need a critique. A great scoring shot, lots of comments, they might find that enough. Also, if some glaring flaws have been pointed out for a week, maybe they will decide they don't need a longer more detailed pointing out of those flaws :-)
Also, I think it would show a level of committment if you will, from the photographer, to come back and ask for it. It is too easy to click that little button when submitting. Obviously, since there are always hundreds of images in the queue. People have admitted before, that when brand new, they may not even know what that button really is all about. I didn't. I saw it, do you want a critique? Heck ya, why not? :-)
Some very 'casual' users, first time entrants that may lose interest and never even come back and read a critique or even really appreciate it. Follow your score for a week, show enough interest and committment to come back and ask for a critique. Not a lot to ask I feel, compared to the effort that critiquers put into it.
My thoughts on the matter anyway :-) |

Great idea taterbug. I think it makes perfect sense. Sometimes I still want more after I got my challenge finished with.
It might also be nice if there was a box for non CC comments.
Such that if you are interested in an in-depth critique from other users, that is shown when they are voting. Some people don't want the in-depth, they are quite happy with "Wow, amazing pic!" or whatever.
While it's nice to receive such comments, I do believe that there is a big difference.
I think also that some people do hold back because they don't know how an in-depth critique will be received.
Limiting the use of the CC box to a certain percentage will allow the users the choice as well as increase the "value" in their eyes because it's not something that they will get every shot. While most are putting a lot of thought into their images, I strongly feel that there are large numbers of people submitting that don't. |
