You commented to that effect on my image too... on the contrary, it seems half of the contest wouldn't know what painting with light is if it came and bit them on the nose. I can just see a bunch of ignorant voters voting down anything where the moving lightsource isn't IN the image. Some of us are subtle enough to actually paint the subject of their photograph rather than just waving a torch around within a composition, and we're being punished by the influential ignorance of a loud minority who are hell-bent on misinterpreting and oversimplifying every challenge description, and telling everyone else how to vote.

I'm not sure whether I agree more with Riot or with Art Roflmao here ;)
I never feel like I am wasting time when I vote. People have posted their work online for us to see, to vote on and to comment on. I might not like every picture in a challenge, I might not think it conforms to the challenge description but I appreciate seeing it. I believe in treating the work and the photographer with a degree of respect.
.....Even if they do post pictures of dogs, cats, babies, toys and guitars in every damned challenge ;)

I specifically didn't participate in the paint with light challenge because someone told me the light was supposed to be moving when I shot the picture.... to which my poor lil' brain said, "WTF?? Too hard." I was going to bully Brother Beast into posing holding a kerosene lantern up next to his face. |

I must apologize....I was one of those "people" who did read the instructions and interrupted the directions differently. OOPS....I thought that the mention of a pen light was a suggestion. Yes, I used the sun as my light source and it is not stationery; however, apparently that was not the correct interruptation. Oh well, live and learn. I like the voting and as I vote on each photo - be it like mine - not quite in the challenge description - or correctly in the challenge description....I learn from all of you and enjoy how your eye sees the world around you. Do I comment on all of them - no a/c I am not as technically proficient as the rest of you. I comment on what pleases my artist eye be it technically correct or not. I thank all of you that do comment and give me constructive critism. I am aiming to do better and your comments are sincerely welcomed. |

I think if you used a long shutter speed, allowing the sun time to "move", then it meets the challenge. |

I am a new member and a VERY amateur photographer who joined with the purpose of learning as much as possible from a group of extremely talented and creative folk.
I have entered my first challenge, "comfort" and have voted on two challenges, and just have a couple comments.
First, I agree that people need to read the descriptions, not just the challenge title. The title "Comfort" said to me "something that is or makes you comfortable". The description said, "something that comforts you". To me they're not necessarily the same thing. And when I voted I had to keep reminding myself of the description and the fact that what one may not take comfort in, whether it's religion, alcohol, furry animals or whatever, another could. My pic has gotten one comment questioning "comfort", and it definitely IS something that comforts me.
I am not going to vote on the "painting with light" challenge, though.
My photography knowledge, especially concerning use of lighting, is so rudimentary that I don't feel qualified to vote or critique this category.
When I do vote, I attempt to explain why I voted as I did; what I like about a picture as well as what I feel could be improved, and I hope others will do the same for me. I hope this site is more than just a place to show off, but a site to share knowledge and skills. I feel that if someone takes the time and effort to post their best they deserve my time and attention to look at it. |
