I took this pic a while ago and it's sort of stayed in the back of my mind ever since. There is something I like about this. There's good and bad in it photographically.
What can I do to it to make it more dramatic?
Feel free to do what you like with it.
My goal is to get this looking good and print up a 5x7. Original pic is 5mp. This is the original right from the camera. I wanted to crop it, but everything I do to it seems to make it look worse. I can't stop second guessing myself on it. This is probably because of my low experience.
Thanks to all who take the time to help! |

Don't know that I made it look "good" but I made it look different!
Cropped. Hue -100, sat +30, USM set at 87%, radius=22, thresh=0. And I agree that it is a very interesting picture. |

To be honest this is a pretty good pic on it's own...maybe a little lighter or more seperation between the subject and background...but this is the type stock photo my company buys for their advertising.
Anyways I had fun with it, subtle changes.
Xero Graphics Soft Vignette filter (2 passes)
First Pass Zoom Out with horizontal lines
Second Pass light Vignette to darken corners
Xero Graphics Iridium filter (very subtle) gives those wavy lines (really noticable in upper right)
ED: Typo
Post ED: I meant upper right...

Cool shot. I just tweaked it a little to bring out the figure more by selecting him and increasing the contrast and saturation on him only. Also did a slight crop just enough to take out the light in the top right corner but keep it to the 5x7 ratio.
Don't know if this is better or worse but slightly different!

Thanks so much for your comments.
I especially like the one that says that it's a good picture. I liked it, but I wasn't prepared to go that far ;).
Thanks melethia. I played with the color and got some fun results too. I'm also not sure I liked them. It's a strange pic that way. I really like your crop.
Awpollard, thanks for taking the time with the pic. I don't know how to do that Xero thing. Is that a PS plugin?
Prism. Thanks for taking the time to work with selections on the the man. I've always found it hard to use such tools because my pictures are seldom really sharp :). The picture does indeed benefit from a little increase in saturation on the man. I am going to see what I can do with curves.
Thanks again. If anyone else has ideas, it would be fun to see. |

Xero Graphics Freeware PS plug-ins All four sets of PS filters have one thing or another that is useful or creative.

Thanks for the help!
JPochard. I was considering trying something like a selective desat, but I usually find it really hard to do the selecting with soft edged subjects. Incidentally, it's a suit he's wearing. I seem to recall that it's grey. Nice effect.
Xion. This is a bit more along the lines of what I had been thinking with regard to the treatment of the background to isolate the subject.
Andy. Thanks for the link. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed still by PS (I've only edited like 10 photos so far... ever), but I'll save that link for later.
I'll play with this photo over the weekend and post my results.
I'm too indecisive :(
