Just trying my hand at RAW and having difficulties at the first hurdle. XP can't see the .CR2 files on the compact flash card when I try to read from from the camera or download from the CF card in the camera.

I borrowed a card reader from work and that works fine.

Has anyone had the same problem or should I just go and buy a card reader.

many thanks
Keith

If you haven't done so already, try this as your first step: Microsoft RAW Image/Thumbnail viewer

I've never downloaded directly from the camera, have always used a card reader, so can't personally speak to your issue, but most people that I know, with Canons, have installed the Canon software that came with the camera; have you tried that?

thanks for the info.

To note, I've installed the camera drivers etc and their software.

I'll try the Microsoft RAW image / Thumbnail viewer hopefully that'll work.

cheers

Yup it will work... Win XP does not support viewing raw files in Thumbnail view or Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Raw Image/Thumbnail viewer adds a new piece much like Windows Picture and Fax viewer but for raw images only.

Keith, if you are using/will be using (I do) Canon Digital Photo Professional for editing and Converting (came on a seperate canon CD) make sure that it is at the most recent version v2.0.3.7 as there has been a lot of enhancements since it first shipped a while back. There is a updater on the canon site if you are not at the rev above.

Although I only use a card reader and so have never encountered this myself, I believe that there is an issue with transferring RAW files directly from the camera over USB using the OS. I *think* that this can be overcome by using the Canon software to transfer, but not completely sure on that.
Your best bet, by far, is to buy a card reader. When transferring full cards, the time saved will be very significant. Most fast cards can benefit from a really fast reader, and the FireWire readers are much faster than the USB 2.0 readers. If you have FireWire on your system, consider a FireWire reader.

Not sure if this will help you out or not, but I don't have a card reader, and I transfer canon RAW (CR2) files very fast and easy through the EOS viewer utility program which comes with the 20D.

When you open the EOS viewer utility program, the Canon 20D will show on the top left side, double click it and you will be able to see the files on the card, then just drag the file over to where you want to have it on your HD.
