Awesome site! I love the music and animation! And of course the pictures are great, too!

Hey guys, I had some complaints that the images were loading too slowly on some connections, so I've reduced the images sizes.
Could you let me know how quick it is now, and whether the quality of the images is still okay?
Cheers,
Bob

From a quick first look Bob -

i hate the music, but I hate having music imposed on me anywhere, anytime, anyway.

I agree that the opening of the site is too fast. A t some point along that line it becomes more about Flash and less about Photography, if you see what I mean.

I wonder if you have too many images up there? Less could well be more in terms of impact? I would want some potential client to finish viewing the site wanting more, rather than feeling that they've seen rather a lot of pictures ...

Mind you, fabulously professional presentation, and certainly will help you, I would say.

excellent site, great photos, but annoying rollover-sound. Buttons seem too large in relation to thumbs.

Thanks, I'm not sure what you mean though? Which buttons? Which thumbs?

I had anticipated that the style wouldn't be to everybody's taste... my reasoning for the current style is that the people I want to impress are those in the music business and I wanted my site to come across in a similar way to an MTV-conscious young band's website.

I agree about music being instrusive... I hate it when other sites force music on me! But it does suit this particular style of website, and hopefully I'll get better music on it soon.

Perhaps there are too many photos... other people's portfolios do put me off when there are too many photos, but from my point of view that's usually because only a few of the photos are *really* good. Of course, I think *all* my photos are really good (joking), so it's hard for me to ruthlessly cut them down. Some people have mentioned that they like the variety. But if anyone has ideas for photos they think are weak that I should purge, please let me know.

Although I have reasons for making the site the way it is, all feedback is helpful and may persuade me to make changes!

Astounding web. Very nice. And the photos are superb. Well done.

Love the website.

No changes are necessary, but if I were to be critical I have a couple of minor comments on image choice.

I would say that your "contemplation" image on the first page of "World" is outshone by the other images on the page and might be moved into a later page or removed. The "performers" section is pleasantly ecelctic, but the eclecticism is marred a little by 2 images of bullet for my valentine on page 1 and 1 image at the start of p2 - maybe spread them out a little more. I liked your Oasis image - maybe it deserves better than p3.

Makes me think that I should go and sort out my mess of a site...!

Thanks,
is it in general a bad idea to clump together photos of the same band/event?

Love the site, but the music, like the other's said. Either give me a choice to turn it off or at least give me some variety. Otherwise, I AM SO JEALOUS!!!

If I could afford you I would hire you to revamp my site as well!

I think the intro is fine with the fast pace since that is the style you want to project (I assume) and I have always liked that horizontal expando thing.

I could not get into the pictures as it would not come back with a response - maybe just busy :) Will try later but I know the shots are pretty good from what I see here ;-)

- The only real thing I did find hard to read was the text on the "Performers" - I find it runs into the background too much due to the B&W. Maybe a more vivid colour would work - obviously it needs to be the same colour on all the galleries.

- Maybe increase the size of the skip intro label a little.

- I have music off on this machine but I am not a fan of the whole concept unless it's off by default. I can see the arguement for a band style to have it on but make sure it changes quickly enough so it does not sound like a video arcade game :)

Not bad per se, but I presume that this is at least part advertisement. A feeling that some people could get from a quick flick through your website (maybe only looking at the first screen in the music section) is that your gig work has a focus on heavy rock/metal, and a large proportion of the work is with a small number of groups. It takes a couple more clicks to see the diversity and that your work does not revolve around a small number of bands. Not a big issue, but something that occurred to me (so might occur to others).

Good luck in any case!

Good point... I'll resort the photos!

Thanks everyone for the comments :-)

Stunning site and inspirational, too, as I am doing my first live gig session in a couple of weeks for my bro's band.

I actually liked the music but maybe an off or mute button would be good.

Bob - way to go!! I think the site as a whole is interesting, easy to navigate, but mostly - superb in the image department. They are quick to load and the quality of them is varied and interesting. There wasn't one I didn't like. I like the music on there now, but jazz of any kind is pleasing to my ear. Congrats on a job well done.

I don't find that the skip intro needs to be any larger, as it is so fast and quick, there's not much you want to skip.

KUDOS!!

I think it's perfect. Fast is the key IMHO and you hit the speed part right on the head. Slick and well laid out, nice consevative color choices, smart, clean mouse-overs.

I'd might make the personal comments on the About Me page sound as if someone else wrote them....like a review type of bio.

"Bob is an accomplished, award winning, freelance photographer living in..."

I might want to buy the template if you're seriously up for selling it. I'll contact you on the side but I think it's one of the best I've seen.

Well done.

Presumably this is written in Flash or something similar?
It's just that I get a plain black screen herer at work. You are alienating those people who may wish to view your site if you offer no HTML alternative!

I'll have a look at home. :)
03/06/2006 07:53:02 AM · #43
That's worrying... do they not let you use Flash at work? I'd rather not have to offer an HTML alternative, I was suffering quite a bit from bandwidth theft from little kiddie Myspace users and people using my photos as their personal avatars, I'm hoping Flash will kill all that!
I should make clear that I bought both templates from a 3rd-party to save myself time!

If your hosting company allow it, there is a way to stop off-site hotlinks via a ".htaccess" file. I have mine set so the images are just not served unless the referer is one I specify (there is a way to allow it without a referer [i.e. type in the picture location] but again I didn't allow this).

I believe you can also serve them a different file instead of what they asked for :-) but I didn't bother since it's still using your bandwidth. It does not stop them stealing it obviously but at least you can stop them stealing your bandwidth.

I don't think I can do that with my current webhost.
