Can the name of an entry affect the score?? Opinions please.

Speaking for myself personally, and it is only my opinion, but I think the title of a photo is just as important as the entry. It balances it. HOWEVER, sometimes a stadegy of "Untitled" works for some folks! LOL....

As an example, in the "current" Odd Couple challenge, I don't think without my title others would have "get" it. I personally like to try and give the best title. The thing to watch for though is not to make it too wordy. Tends to lose pizzazz that way.

Edited for Bear :) By the way Bear, LOVE your portrait!! You look VERY Cape Codish!!

Tough question. My general sense is it can affect it more negatively than positively. Titles that try to "steer" voters seem to cause negative results. On the other hand, truly brilliant titles can be a positive influence.

"Odd Couple" ain't "recent", it's "current"; still being voted on...

Yeah, that's right. LOL...The one that is up now. I mean recent. No, wait, I mean voted on....NO WAIT, that is past tense. I mean the one being voted on now. Yeah, that's it, current.

C'mon Bear! LOL...Let's not be the grammar police and then use a word like "ain't". :) I am sure they knew what I meant.

I don't judge people on their title... I actually don't even look at it. I want the photo to speak to me. I judge based on the picture itself.

Am I the only one that does this?

I usually try and judge an entry on its photographic qualities first - if its a good photo then the title shouldn't matter. However I can be influenced by a clever title.
But it seems that more often than not the clever entry names are for photos that are totaly off subject and trying to justify their entry. In that case it can be a negative influence.

I think they can make a fairly large difference. It isn't going to save a bad picture, but it can make a good picture great.

And on the topic of long titles, my four longest titles have all come in 13th or better. We're not talking sorta long either...I bet if there were a search scores by title length, I'd be up there...

"The sea, once it casts its spell, holds you forever in its net of wonder."
Work was still calling, but his inner party animal had already escaped...
"If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?"
Canada creates frozen clone army...plans to take over the world!

seems to be the norm....

I definitely think the title affects the score.
I have been known to subtract one point for bad "shoe-horn" titles and adding a point or two if it's perfectly suited and appropriate to the subject.

In other words, Bridog, there is no real answer to your question. It is all subjective. So the answer is really yes and no.

My opinion is for you to just do what you think is best - title, no title, long title, short title. It really only makes the biggest difference to you.

Mee, too. I look at th photo, and sometimes read the title, but I don!t reaaly care the title. If the title is brilliant, or on the other side, way bad, I mention it in my comment. If the title is "untitled", it does not influence my vote, though, I have the feeling that the user doesn't really care. Even "..." is a better title than "Untitled". If a phot needs the title to make the viewer understand what's it about, it's way bad... And sometimes, a too direct title leads me to some thoughts and away from the first impact I could have had if I had not seen the title first.

I feel that a picture should stand on its own without a title and meet the challenge, if it doesn't do this and needs the title to meet the challenge I question it on DNMC status.

This said I look at the titles - but only to see what the picture taker has seen.

My "Duotones II" entry didn't have a title. The first comment I got was "needs a title." It's the only comment I didn't check as helpful.

A title can be useful to help steer a viewer toward whatever the photographer wants the viewer to see, either literally or figuratively. And sometimes, a title just doesn't fit. Or I can't come up with one. Not every photo needs a title.

Be aware, though, that putting in just a blank space in the title field will mean that you can't click on the nonexistent title on your DPC profile page to view it. Also, at the end of the challenge, your picture will be called "This image has been removed." on the challenge page.
