Yup I am getting a refund and I have enough to get a piece
of fast glass.
I have:
Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED
Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8D
Nikon AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D
Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D
Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D ED
I am thinking about AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED and getting rid of the 18-70mm, 20mm and apply the funds to the 12-24mm f/4 leaving just a small gap from 60 to 80mm.
Any thoughts?

It probably won't return as much as a no-load mutual fund in a Roth IRA...
Sorry, this post is a proxy for your parents yelling in your ear about responsibility...
I'm not familiar with Nikon stuff, so I'm no help. At least this keeps ya bumped at the top. |

Uncle Sam isn't giving you money - you are getting back what's rightfully yours. |

What you mean is that Uncle Sam is finally repaying that interest-free loan you gave him last year and that you loaned him enough for a nice lens?
I think you need to rework your W-4 and have less taken out of your paycheck. |

Yes I think your right. But then it would be harder to justify this purchase! I just can't help myself.
Any thoughts on the OP? |

The 17-55 2.8 would be nice, but I'd keep the 20mm prime. There's just no substitute for fast glass.
Also, if you figure out how much Uncle Sam would have deducted from your check and instead put that in some kind of interest earning account, you might have a few $$ more at the end of the year.
I just realized that I sound like MY parents did. Good Grief..... |

I've been giving my lense collection some thought, and something along these lines might work:
Keep the 80-200 f2.8.......I'm keeping my 70-200 f2.8VR
Use a TC20e 2x teleconverter with that lense (f2.8 X 2 = f5.6 at 400mm) for the reach.
Get the 12-24 f4 for the wide side.
For everything in between and a great walk around lense get the 18-200 VR.
This is what I'm seriously considering doing on Wednesday when a local store gets in a shipment of D200's in a kit with the 18-200VR for $2399.
How does this sound? Am I on the right track? |

Sounds great. I'm saving the body upgrade for next refund and I think it will be a D2X and keep my D70s for back-up. Plus I'm not getting that much back.
The 18-200VR looks good sounds good but I have become a fast glass junkie! Can't wait to see some pics form your D200 its gonna be nice I bet. The CFO of the company I work for is waiting for his I can't wait to check it out.
Good Luck!

Sounds like a good plan to me. That would give you a great set of glass through 200mm. Go for it!

What you get really depends on what you shoot, hope to shoot, etc.

How about the new 100mm prime macro with VR?
It's a bit expensive, but WOW! NICE!
WOW!
*drool*
Edit. Oh yeah, if you don't know about it yet, go check it out at dpreview.com
Yum.
I might just have to wait until Canon comes out with a similar one.
Of course, that would probably set me back a few bucks.

The 17-55mm 2.8 is great. I consider it the must have, all purpose lens for Nikon digital. Everyone at my studio that has Nikon has one.
From there it is about personal preference. I shoot a lot of products, macros, architecture, and other stuff that just made sense for me to have the 85mm 2.8 PC lens. I can perspective correct for architecture by shifting, I can make great 3 panel panos by shifting, shifting also eliminates reflections when shooting head on into shiny stuff, etc, etc. Tilting allows for DOF control. Its probably the sharpest lens Nikon makes. It is completely manual though so no point and shoots :-/
I know when you look at the 85mm PC you say..."it's manual, it sits in a range covered by other zooms, it's as expensive as hell"... No other lens does what this does and for anything that doesn't require an automatic I usually reach for this lens.
The 10mm is awesome as well but you really better like super wide.
The real question you have to answer honestly. What do you like to shoot, what are you being kept from shooting by your lenses and how do you see your kit building too what purpose.

Yeah I think I had a few to many Jack & Cokes last night. When I got up this morning reason took over.
I looked at the fact that the 17-55 is 1200.00 and asked my self "Do I really need this fine a lens right now since I need to go to New York to meet my fiancée's father?" so I think after sobering up I gonna get the $500 Tokina 12-24 and use the rest of the cash for the trip (I gotta have a super wide for the trip.)
I think thats a smarter way for me to go. Thanks to Doc and Spazmo for being the voice of reason as I read back through this post.
Im gonna get that lens I want it bad but I guess it will have to wait for bouns time which is in 6 months. I can wait.
Thanks Again Everyone
