In a wonderful âspace operaâ called A Fire Upon The Deep, Verner Vinge postulates a universe where civilizations grow in knowledge, technology, sophistication, and power and ultimately transcend to âthe beyondâ where they cease to be involved in Universal Affairs.
Photographers here often go through several stages of growth:
1. New photographer â wide-eyed at the photos available on DPC.
2. Lurking photographer â trying to learn enough and to work up enough courage to enter challenges.
3. Growing photographer â mastering the camera and photo editing tools resulting in improving scores once they begin entering challenges.
4. Accomplished photographer â usually gets good scores (with occasional out-of-the-box disasters thrown in for grins) mentoring others and offering wisdom in response to the toughest questions. They begin developing their own style.
5. Ribbon winner â generally gets high scores on challenges they enter, though they enter fewer and fewer of them. May have many ribbons to their credit.
6. Transcendent photographers â leave DPC, usually quietly, and take their attention and photographs to a transcendent reality (i.e. internet destination) and gradually become uninvolved with DPC Affairs.
Sometimes a photographer will get stuck at a stage ⦠I certainly am. Or they will skip a stage or do them out of order.
So hereâs my question, where do DPC transcendent photographers go when they leave DPC? Whereâs âThe Beyondâ where we can find them?

Are you looking for someone in particular?

No, there have been many. Looking for their destinations. |

I'm still stuck between "Growing Photographer" and "Accomplished Photographer".
I don't think I'll ever hit "Ribbon Winner" ;) |

Maybe you only find them when you become transcendent? Dunno. I think I saw this in a star trek show but instead of photographers it was volgons or something. |

Anyone could see The road that they walk on is paved in gold
And It's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll Never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows Wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today , today

I thought that song was about suicide, not transcendence..
although one can argue they're both the same thing. |

Dude! They dont go anywhere! They stay here & continue to rack up the ribbons!
As far as I know (read: I know nothing as my knowledge is extremely limited), those that bounce from dpc leave for reasons other than bc they have transcended the benefits of dpc.
Some folks have left for work reasons & stuff but no doubt have or will come back.
edit: there's a better place than dpc?

I think I'm at the same spot as you. However, I don't agree with your second statement. Looking at your stuff, I'd say there is a ribbon in your future.
Edit - gee, I'm dumb...you already are a ribbon winner...DOH!

Maybe they don't go anywhere else on the internet, they go other places in the real world and actually do photography for a living.
I really like your post though, I think your stages of DPC'ers is perfectly accurate.
I'm not sure where I fit in there though, probably at the "Make's a lot of threads and submits really wierd pictures" stage.
Hum...

haha.. well, I meant the "Ribbon Winner" *STAGE*, not actually being one.
Two low-score ribbons (both my images were under 6.7), are hardly indicative of being in that "Ribbon Winner" stage. |

B5/Vorlons?
Star Trek has a series of races that would also match, but nothing I can think of that sounds like that, and none of the major recurring races (there are a few you could make arguments for I suppose). |
