OK, who's tried em? Who's using them? What do you like/dislike?

I read a review about them in Digital Photo Pro today and it got my attention right away. You can build on their domain or on your own domain for free. The first gig of image storage is free (pretty cheap after that). They do e-comm stuff for you basically with money deposited into your bank account daily or sent via paypal. Site building looks pretty simple. Really I see no downside so far.

Since my webpage has been in a constant state of rebuild lately (been having trouble finding a format that looks good but easy to update regularly without becoming a part-time coder) - so I'm going to give this one a try. I'll let you know how it works for me.

What are these sites for? Are they like PBase? Are they stock sites?
02/26/2006 07:29:25 PM · #5
but smugmug makes you use @smugmug.com, right? I want to use my own domain that is already on my bus. cards, etc.

No, this is a website building/hosting/image printing/e-commerce site built specifically for photographers.

I was just perusing smugmug and there was a mention of being able to use your own website somehow.. I didn't check into it further because the $149.95 price is a bit steep for me on a per year basis.

I don't make that much on DPCPrints in a year so I don't know if a PRO package (which looked like the only one geared to easy selling) would be financially sound for me. Not a smart idea if I'm losing money by going that route.

Guess I'll delve a bit deeper and see if there are better options for less money.

Then, what's PBase? I'm sorry if I sound ignorant.

Is clickimage.com brand new or something? Google shows that site with a PageRank of 1 (out of 10) which is horrible but could just mean it's a new site with hardly anybody linking to it.
02/26/2006 07:43:40 PM · #10
if you buy the pro package for $149.00/year.

You can use your own domain name. But you must own your domain name. Also for that price you get to sell your photos for a profit. And if I am not mistaken they are working on package deals for you to be able to sell to your customers packages like the studios do. Their price was $99/year for a pro account but it went up.

Click around and see what you get for the money. They have three different steps.

Standard:$39.95/year
Power: $59.95/year
Pro: $149.95/year

yes, its new. The article said "just launched" but didn't say when.

Rex - ClickImage will cost me nothing if I keep storage under 1gb and use my own domain. if I want 200gb its only $50 (one time charge, not annual).

Looks like a monthly Charge:

//www.clickimage.com/services/storage-pricing.asp?sm=d_b

That is too expensive when you compare that smugmug is $149.95/year and is UNLIMITED STORAGE and you get this:

//www.smugmug.com/pro/

I stand corrected, but and this matters, I don't want a @smugmug address! I can't imagine ever needing storage for 200gig - 5 gig is a lot, besides it says: "Below are storage prices for Lightboxes & Image Archives only. Please note there is no limit on the number of images you can upload for published Event Proofs or PhotoArt Galleries since they are not counted as part of your Lightbox & Image Archive storage amount" so that's not a real issue.

I have over 8GB of photos on smugmug now. But try it and tell me how you like it.

I just think smugmug is well worth the $150/year for what you get including your own web address. I just haven't taken care of that part yet.

I use my own domain on smugmug...

//www.dterryphotography.com

And so far I'm up to 26G of online images... I'm waiting for the day when they laugh at me and tell me that, when they said "unlimited storage" they didn't really *mean* unlimited. :-)

Man that is a lot of photos. I really love that ability to have an offsite storage.

ok, I've been goofing with their sitebuilder for about an hour and gotta say - soooo easy and it looks good - professional even. I'm building on their domain for now while my domain makes necessary changes to move the build there (says will take up to 48 hours). Here is a sneek-peek of what I've done so far... gotta say, I'm pretty impressed

Just ordered a few prints - that will be the truest test. If the prints are nice and the webbuild is as quick and easy as I just found - I'm a fan. No kidding - just over an hour for this web build. I spent 2 weeks on the former look and still didn't know how to add more content to it.

So, these sites will make your prints for you if someone orders them? That could be useful. Someone bought two prints from my Pbase, but finding some place to get the prints made was kind of a pain.

It don't work Cindi.
02/26/2006 09:47:23 PM · #21
Yes, your client orders directly from the site, pay with credit card or whatever, and site takes a few % for the bother & sends you the rest. You can control the profit by pricing your prints - for example a 4X6 might cost you (from their printers) 18 cents - you choose what you will sell it for - say you choose $2.00 - you get the profit via direct deposit. I've been using PhotoReflect for the same purpose (an e-com provider for prints) but this is so much simpler since I won't have to link to it - its all included.

For those working on studios... here is another little-known/little-mentioned nice site for supplies: Set Shop

It was mentioned in the same magazine (Digital Photo Pro).

Keep us posted. Tell us how the prints look.

Seems like you have to register there to buy photos.

Oh and for those of us that got in before the end of the year at smnugmug it is still $99/year. Seems the grandfather clause took effect. That is why I went ahead and upgraded my account.

Worked on the web site build for another hour - hour and a half today. The drag & drop content add rocks - I've never had such an easy web build.
And it doesn't look like a 90s home-made website like some builders.

So far so good - I'll let you know how the prints look.

By the way, besides prints you can also have your clients choose from mugs & t-shirts and all that jazz too - nice to have that all in one place.
