One last great class in FEBRUARY!
The Environmental Portrait with SIX Different Professional Photographers, all with different styles and approaches to shooting portraits
Six-Week Workshop (once/week)

This is a great class!! With Julia Dean as the âthreadâ throughout the class, six different professionals (such as National Geographic photographer Gerd Ludwig) working in photography will come in as the guest for the evening to show their own work, discuss their styles and approaches to shooting people and to give participants a particular assignment to shoot for the next class. Each guest teacher will also critique the participantsâ assignments. (There are only a couple of spots left, so please call soon!)

Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers â II with Natasha Calzatti
Four-Week Workshop
Thursdays, 5-8 pm
March 2 â 23
This is a hands-on class, with each student using an Apple eMac station equipped with an Intuos 2 graphics tablet and Adobe Photoshop CS2 software. The purpose of this class is to raise the participantâs knowledge to a more professional level of digital workflow and build on the fundamentals obtained from the course Adobe Photoshop for Photographers â I. Color management, monitor calibrations, color settings in Photoshop, and output profiles will be covered in detail.
Workshop Fee: $320

The Fine Art of Travel Photography with Mark Edward Harris

Two Saturdays, 9 am - 1 pm
March 4 & March 11
This workshop explores how to create fine art travel photography, images that go far beyond the âI was hereâ photograph. Students working in either digital or film will learn how to create beautiful landscapes and townscapes, as well as powerful environmental portraits and photo essays â pictures that tell a story. Assignments will be given, processed (if shooting film), and reviewed over the weekend. For digital shooters, we have a digital projector to project your work for critique.

Finding and Making Great Portrait Light: On Location and in the Studio with Mark Harmel

Are you ready to turn off that on-camera flash to learn how to find and create great portrait lighting? On the first day of this workshop, the class will meet a Disney Hall to explore the subtle differences between good and bad light as well as learning how to transform the quality of the light. This great location offers endless opportunities to interact with the environment to create compelling location portraits with great light. The following Sunday, the class will convene at the Julia Dean Photo Workshops to review the Disney Hall shoot and apply what was learned using studio lights. And more, of course.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers â I with Natasha Calzatti

This four-week class will cover scanning, image manipulation, and printing using Adobe Photoshop CS2 and will teach the benefits of using a digital darkroom. Students will also learn to understand the ways in which Adobe Photoshop CS2 interprets and manages color thereby answering the question: âHow do I make my prints match the image on my monitor?â This is a hands-on class, with each student using an Apple eMac stations equipped with an Intuos 2 graphics tablet and Adobe Photoshop CS2 software.

The Art of Black & White Printing with Julia Dean
Six-Week Workshop (once/week)
Wednesday evenings, 7-10 pm
March 8 - April 19 (no class on March 15)
This class is for those of you who still want to learn how to print B&W fiber base photographs in the darkroom. In cooperation with Photo Impact West (30th & Ocean Park Blvd.), we are able to offer a group printing class. In this class, each student will get his or her own enlarger during each class period. The first and last week of the six-week class is spent at the Julia Dean Photo Workshops with discussions on printing techniques, paper and film choices, developers and toners, enlargers, and spotting and matting prints. For the four weeks in between, the students will meet at Photo Impact West, first in the studio for a brief critique and the remaining time in the darkroom with constant supervision and assistance from instructor Julia Dean (Julia will share techniques she learned from her mentor Berenice Abbott).
Workshop Fee: $415
Lab Fee: $150 (for class use of one enlarger per student, plus one monthâs unlimited printing at Photo Impact West.)

This is a four-week class designed for photographers who want to understand and explore both the art and the business of wedding photography. The class will discuss individual portfolios, presentations, ethics and responsibilities, promotion, bidding, contracts, pre and post production, natural and portable light sources, film, final presentations to clients, and book making. Specific assignments will be given in the course of the class, such a bidding for a job, formulating a contract, and creating a usable promotional piece.

Good lighting can make or break a portrait. Poorly lit people never look good, regardless of environment of expression, shears creative lighting can elevate an otherwise mediocre pose of situation to a truly memorable level. This workshop is for those who want to learn creative lighting. Over the weekend, Michael will show you his own work, discuss his techniques, go out on location shoots with you, and a whole lot more. Location lighting will be available for small groups of participants to use during the in-class assignments.

This class is designed for the amateur photographer who would like to learn advanced photo manipulation techniques, building on the foundation of the Adobe Photoshop Elements 101 course. This is a hands-on class, with each student using an Apple eMac station equipped with an Intuos 12 graphics tablet and Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 software.

This is an extra special workshop, with renowned photographer Robert Farber coming to Los Angeles from New York.
Shooting nudes and capturing beauty is more than taking a beautiful picture of a person. It is reaching inside the person to capture his or her essence. This must be done with the right light and the correct ambience. In this workshop, Robert Farber will show what it takes to capture beauty. He will take participants out to shoot models on location, as well as in the studio, and he will even show how to make use of simple lights around the house. Additional discussions include how to develop a style, what the latest digital technology is for shooting and printing work, and how to publish and market images.

Lost in Transition: Digital Workflow and Creative Techniques for Photographers with Mark Berndt

This course de-mystifies digital photography by relating the digital experience to familiar film terminology and methods. Students learn professional workflow for capture, download, file management and processing of digital images. Discussion of cameras, megapixels, memory cards and file formats, computers, printers and software allows students to make informed decisions when building a digital system. Creative assignments allow students to practice step-by-step methods for downloading, organizing, editing, processing, client presentation, and archiving of digital files, all the while adding to their portfolio.
